The Philadelphia 76ers have some quality legends.
While a guy like Charles Barkley might go on national TV and call out Joel Embiid for the way that he's playing, or the shape that he looks to be in, the Sixers still have an ex-player like Allen Iverson, who is always showing love, or Julius Erving, who keeps it honest, but rarely tries to push limits.
One thing about Julius "Dr. J" Erving that adds more value is the fact that he's won at the NBA's highest level in the past. So if we're talking about championships, that's the guy that current players want to consult with if they are looking for advice or words of encouragement.
Dr. J makes himself available to the current roster
The Sixers haven't won it all in decades, but they just added two championship-winning stars to the roster in LeBron James and Jaylen Brown.
Does the Doc really need to give them advice? Probably not. And you can bet he's not going to force anything. Erving, who is admittedly a fair-weather fan at this point, has been to his fair share of games over the years, but he told the Action Network that there isn't a ton of interaction that he has with the team.
"They're coming to do their job," Erving said. He added that if any player wants to ask for his opinion or his advice, he is "certainly willing to pass that along."
The best type of legend
Julius Erving will continue to play it cool with the 76ers, and that's the best type of legend an organization can have. He's always available if needed, but he's not going to force any advice or be overly critical if the team struggles or he simply sees things getting done in a different light.
The Sixers have plenty of star power, and now they have more than enough championship experience within the locker room to teach other guys the ropes.
Since LeBron James has been in the NBA (2003), the veteran forward has won a total of four NBA championships. He was a key contributor each time, winning the NBA Finals MVP award on four different occasions.
Jaylen Brown hasn't been around nearly as long as LeBron, but he landed his first title during the Boston Celtics' 2023-2024 season. After the Celtics were crowned champions, Brown was also named the MVP of the series. Now, the two stars will attempt to bring the city its first title since Erving did it in 1983.
