While there has been no official confirmation as of yet, it is probably safe to assume that LeBron James is close to hanging his sneakers up. While he is still an All-Star, he is already 41 years old. He is on his 23rd season in the NBA, although most signs point to him actually being on the hunt for another home to presumable end his legendary career with.

To that effect, the Philadelphia 76ers could actually present a compelling case for his next landing spot. Rumors say that James is looking to have a bigger role than the one he currently has with the Lakers, which is a strong indication that he and his camp are seriously considering leaving Los Angeles, a place he has called his home for eight years.

The 76ers, which nearly landed LeBron in the summer of 2018 before he went on to go to the West and sign with LA, could certainly use what one of, if not the greatest, player of all time can still bring to the table at this point in his career. As such, Philly’s brain trust could advertise the franchise as a viable place where he can conclude his stellar career.

The 76ers have exactly what LeBron James is looking for in his next team

Since LeBron declined his player option and was essentially on deck to hit the open market this year, the rumor mill has churned faster with regard to the superstar. After all, while he is already on the cusp of retirement, he is still one of the best players in the league.

James, whose basketball IQ remains unrivaled, would be perfect for what the 76ers are looking for. While his defensive impact has dried up, he can still take over games with his sheer scoring. But more importantly, he is a playmaking savant whose passing is still unmatched by any other forward in the NBA.

The financial maneuvering required of the 76ers to usher James in will be undeniably tedious, even bordering on untenable. But with that being said, having him aboard will be the perfect impetus for the team to finally move past their exorbitant demands from Joel Embiid. Even better, he will be filling in that nominal point guard role for the team — a role that can already manned by Tyrese Maxey, but should be let go to make him even more lethal.

It remains to be seen whether LeBron James and his group still views Philly as having the kind of allure it had back in 2018, but from an objective basketball perspective, the 76ers are precisely the type of team that can still give him the role that he wants at this juncture.
