The Philadelphia 76ers still have one roster spot available for taking, and while the front office may prefer to keep that one open to retain as much flexibility as possible to make other moves when the need arises, they should jump at any opportunity to land a good-fitting veteran. Case in point? Look no further than Nicolas Batum, who remains available for taking in the open market.
Well, one can infer that the main reason why Batum has not been signed yet is that his camp could be padlocked. After all, the 18-year veteran had been flirting with hanging his sneakers up for quite some time now. However, the 76ers are one of the very few teams that probably still have some chance at convincing him to keep playing, especially with the kind of recruitment pitch they can extend to him.

At 37 years old, Batum is no longer someone who can be counted on to play heavy minutes, but the best part about his game is that he does not really need a lot of minutes to showcase his impact on winning. He has always been the kind of player who turns in modest numbers on the regular, but his presence can be felt across the board.
The Frenchman, who previously played for the 76ers during the 2023-24 campaign, is one of the most highly acclaimed role players in the league. At 6'8", he remains an ideal plug-and-play guy who can hit open threes, playmake on the secondary and keep the ball moving, and defend multiple positions with his length and veteran smarts.
Now that Philly has brought in two All-NBA guys in LeBron James and Jaylen Brown, their need for someone like Batum, a high-impact player who barely needs touches to affect the game in a positive way, has only grown. As such, while he is probably already veering toward retirement, the front office should still try to recruit him for a final hurrah.
Nick Nurse would certainly savor having Batum once again not only as a veteran presence, but as a stabilizer off the bench whom he can deploy to calm things down in the halfcourt and arm the team with another three-and-D weapon who can be relied on to make the right reads on both ends.
Batum has not won a championship ring yet, which is a travesty given how much his play translates to winning. There are not a lot of low-usage players with an eclectic approach to the game like him, and the 76ers would fix a slew of roster holes if he decides to delay retirement for one more year and head back to Philly.
