Through their first seven games of the season, the 76ers have posted six wins and just one loss. Their current win-loss card has them in first place in the East right now –– a terrifying proposition for the rest of the league given their ongoing shooting slump as a collective. As of writing, Philadelphia has the fifth-worst shooting percentage on wide-open threes, draining just 29.9 percent of those shots.
Outside shooting was widely pinpointed as a potential problem for Philly when the regular season begins especially since they were ice cold from three-point territory even during the preseason. A handful of their key players have been struggling to hit shots from deep, but things should eventually level out for the group in that regard –– and that is simply bad news for all the other teams.
The 76ers will eventually see their wide-open threes fall
Overall, the 76ers have been pretty stale on offense, ranking 23rd in offensive rating. It is on the strength of their fourth-ranked defense that they have been able to come out with tight wins. Five of their games have gone to crunch time, and they managed to win every single one of them.
Ironically, Philly won its last two games thanks to big threes converted late in the game(both by VJ Edgecombe). Given their ability to hit tough shots, the fact that they have misfired so much on wide-open opportunities from beyond the arc is pretty jarring. If anything, it signals that their current slump in that department is probably just an aberration.
Eventually, the 76ers will progress (and not regress) to the mean and be even more lethal on offense. Guys like Edgecombe, Dean Wade, LeBron James, and Joel Embiid –– who are all shooting way below the league average from beyond the arc right now –– should see their percentages go up, which will translate to the team likewise shooting much better as a collective.
For now, the team is great enough in other areas that they are able to mask their deficiencies from beyond the arc. Even then, they have a 6-1 record, which has them currently sitting on top of the Eastern Conference
To wit, one can only imagine how much better they are going to be if they hit some of the easiest shots available to them. Hopefully, their slump ends sooner rather than later so they can come up with easier wins.
