Following the conclusion of the 2026 NBA Draft, the Philadelphia 76ers can now more properly look forward to pushing through with their plans in the open market this year. Free agency will officially open in a couple of days, and teams will soon be able to transact with free agents without inhibitions, although signings can only become official a week later.
At this juncture, the 76ers seem to have finally become part of the rumor mill's rounds after a period of frustrating inaction. As reported by NBA insider Marc Stein (subscription required), Philly has shown some interest in Cavaliers forward Dean Wade, who has spent the last seven seasons with the franchise.
Wade, a 6'9" veteran who can play both forward positions, has been a trusted hand in Cleveland for quite some time now. His versatility and malleability on the defensive end has especially become an important part of their collective attack, and while the Cavs are reportedly still intent on keeping him in the fold, playoff teams are inevitably going to try and pry him away from the only team he has ever known.
The 76ers are rumored to be in the pursuit for free agent forward Dean Wade
With Kelly Oubre Jr. set to have a complicated free agency, the 76ers are in the market for potential alternatives at the forward positions. That makes Wade such a clean fit in Philly, even though his skill set is markedly different from his more eccentric counterpart.
Unlike Oubre, Wade cannot really create for himself. He does, however, thrive without the ball in his hands as a spot-up shooter. He has drained 36.7 percent of his triples for his career, essentially functioning as a three-and-D piece for the Cavaliers.
The D part, hwoever, is what makes Wade such an intriguing player to go after in the open market. He is the most versatile defensive player the Cavs have, whcih speaks volumes given that they have a one-time Defensive Player of the Year on their roster in Evan Mobley. He can genuinely guard 1 through 5, and he especially fares well when it comes to isolation defense.
Perhaps the best part about the 29-year-old is that he is a pretty safe player to zoom in on in the free agent market. He is not expected to command a lucrative deal, which is ideal for a 76ers front office not at full liberty to go on a shopping spree this summer.
Not a lot of people will be focusing on the fate of Dean Wade this offseason, but the 76ers are definitely on the right track by targeting him. He fits some important needs for the team, and most importantly, he will not cost the team an arm and a leg.
