Not long after pulling off the biggest heist of the offseason so far, the Philadelphia 76ers appear to be doubling down on the superstar trail as they are now reportedly eyeing LeBron James. The King's next landing spot in free agency has become the biggest story so far in the open market, and it seems like the front office has taken the first step to potentially acquiring him.

As reported by The Athletic's Tony Jones, the 76ers have just reached out to James' camp to express their interest in joining the fray for the superstar. Now, the franchise has revived its fantasy scenario from nearly a decade ago when it likewise mounted a loaded chase for James back in 208, only to be beaten out by the Lakers.

James' decision to leave the Lakers this summer felt like it was expected, but it still came off as a pretty surprising twist. After all, most people thought that he was going to retire in Los Angeles. Now, the door has been forced open for the 76ers to assert themselves as a possible landing spot for the 22-time All-Star.

The 76ers have finally taken the first step to landing LeBron James

LeBron has signaled that winning a championship will be his foremost consideration in picking his next ball club. Now that his camp has signaled what is essentially a free-for-all for James, it is now up to the prospective buyers to bolster their respective bids by showcasing their viability as title aspirants.

In that case, the 76ers should feel good about their chances. After fleecing the Celtics for Brown, they now have one of, if not the most, talented team in the Eastern Conference. The quartet of Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Brown, and incoming sophomore VJ Edgecombe simply oozes way too much star power for James' group to ignore.

Technically, the 76ers do not have the financial avenue to lure in a quality role player, more so someone like James. However, as reiterated by his camp, LeBron is willing to forego the opportunity to earn a lucrative sum to get as close as possible to sniffing the championship for the first time since 2020. Heck, the word on the street is that he is even willing to accept the veteran's minimum to chase another ring.

Even at this juncture, the think piece that is the 76ers getting LeBron James seems to be too farfetched to even seriously pontificate on. However, Philly has put itself in a position where it can double down on being ambitious, and at this point, there is really no harm in goig all-in, especially with someone like LeBron James standing as the best possible prize there is.
