The Philadelphia 76ers might only have very little time left before the regular season officially begins, but it seems like the front office is not yet finished trying to find some value additions to the roster that do not cost an arm and a leg, especially with the team still have a roster spot available for taking.
As bared by numerous outlets already, the 76ers have reportedly come to terms with free agent wing Marjon Beauchamp on an Exhibit 10 deal. Now, this seems like a sign-and-waive maneuver to bring him to the team’s G-League affiliate, but as pointed out here, the Trail Blazers, his most recent ball club, could still have his rights therein.
At face value, this deal is practically hamless. The 76ers will probably be content just filling out their two-way spots, and Beauchamp is not going to play much, if at all, anyway. Still, given that existing options in the open market, it becomes way easier to ponder about those players the front office could have gone after instead, at least from a positional perspective.
Beauchamp has never gotten his fair shake in the NBA. Once pegged as a potential key player for the Bucks, he found himself languishing in Milwaukee’s bench behind his veteran counterparts, resulting in him bouncing around the league as of late.
The 76ers should have gone after a different player instead of Marjon Beauchamp
The 76ers, however, have no reason to go after someone like Beauchamp. Already undersized as a small forward and not having reliable three-point shooting, Philly seems to only be doubling down on two of their main weaknesses.
So, who else is better? Well, a specific name is not necessary. The front office should have prioritized adding size to such a critical position, as well as three-point shooting given their stagnant offense so far during the preseason.
Of course, there are also some hard-to-miss names who would have made more sense than the 25-year-old, like, say, Victor Oladipo, but that is merely to chase sterling names. In reality, the 76ers should have likewise cosidered reserving possibly one of their two-way spots to a young prospect who has a higher ceiling to contribute.
Anyway, the Philadelphia 76ers can only focus on how to finish their training camp in strong fashion, and the hope is, the moment the opening whistle comes, the roster will turn out to be as good as it can possibly be, even if only on paper.
