The LeBron James sweepstakes is still underway with no resolution. At this point, no one really knows when the superstar will make his climactic decision. The Philadelphia 76ers are reckoned to be one of the finalists for his next landing spot, but not a lot of people are talking about the price they are paying to join in on the waiting game: missing out on some ideal free agents who were still available on the open market.

To be fair, LeBron's decision has affected the entire league and its stakeholders. However, the 76ers are not your typical party here, as they have a direct interest in this bidding war. That being said, since their fiery start to the offseason, the front office has funneled all its energy into its recruitment pitch for James, and they have been unable to explore more in free agency as a result.
Players like Ziaire Williams, Matisse Thybulle, Jordan Clarkson, and Jonas Valanciunas, among others –– all free agents the 76ers could have easily afforded –– have gone on to sign with other ball clubs. In effect, the James sweepstakes has paralyzed the 76ers front office, and while that is quite understandable, it does not negate the cost of having to wait for LeBron's team of choice.
The 76ers are quietly paying a major price for joining bidding war
Sure, the 76ers have one of the most formidable cores in the NBA as currently constructed, especially with the addition of Jaylen Brown into the fold. Anfernee Simons and Labaron Philon Jr. also seem like tremendous gets for the squad, given their pressing issues off the bench last season. The offseason whiteboard for the front office does not end there, though.
Philly still has some unaddressed issues on the roster. Their lack of size, which got exacerbated with the departures of both Paul George and Kelly Oubre Jr., has only become more glaring. At this point, the team still does not have a more established backup for Joel Embiid. The team's rebounding woes have not been tackled much, either.
Until the LeBron James saga has been resolved, the 76ers are basically in limbo. After all, the superstar himself is a controlling factor in how the offseason could shape up. His hypothetical arrival alone drastically affects the strategy for the rest of the summer.
While it is unfortunate to see free agents slip past the 76ers, this is simply the hidden cost of having to gamble for LeBron James.
