The NBA preseason is almost over for the Philadelphia 76ers, but they have one final phase to get through before they close down training camp and start preparing for their opening night game against the New York Knicks.
On Friday night, the Sixers are set to host the Boston Celtics for the finale. Ahead of the action, the 76ers cut ties with two players, trimming some of the non-guaranteed camp deals. According to 76ers reporter Matt Murphy, the Sixers waived Duke Miles and Saint Thomas.
Shortly after moving off them, the 76ers announced the acquisition of two more players: Cris Carroll and Taye Fields. The two players are inking Exhibit 10 contracts, giving them a chance to later join the team's NBA G League affiliate, the Delaware Blue Coats.
But first, they have a shot at playing some late preseason minutes in the finale.
Sixers make two quick roster moves
Carroll is a small forward hailing from Florida. He attended Youngstown State, where he was a three-star recruit coming out of High School. Over two college seasons, Carroll started in 59 out of 66 games. He saw the court for 25.1 minutes per game and hit on 46.9% of his field goals.
His college stint included averages of 13.2 points, 5.1 rebounds, 1.5 assists, and 1.1 steals per game.
As for Fields, he attended North Alabama recently. During the 2024-2025 season, he started in all 35 games he played, seeing the court for 29.2 minutes per game. Fields shot 53.5% from the field, and hit on 35.7% of his threes, to average 11.2 points per game.
Beyond his scoring, Fields came down with 8.6 rebounds per game and dished out 3.5 assists, while posting 1.5 steals and 1.1 blocks per game on defense. The Sixers already have an idea of what Fields brings to the table, as he spent his Summer League stint playing with the team.
The Sixers currently have a two-way spot open. Throughout training camp, the 76ers gave a look to multiple players beyond Miles and Thomas. Jameer Nelson Jr., Dillon Jones, and the big man Tacko Fall have all been in the mix for the final two-way slot. The fourth and final preseason game will be a final showcase for those prospects to make their case to split time between the Delaware Blue Coats and the primary roster. The Sixers and the Celtics are slated for 7 PM ET tip on Friday.
