Shams Charania gave a report on Wednesday afternoon that is sure to be disappointing for fans of the Philadelphia 76ers. According to the insider, it doesn't look like the Sixers are anywhere near close to agreeing on an extension with Quentin Grimes. Charania appeared on ESPN's NBA Today to deliver the news. We had already seen glimpses of this being the case, but the confirmation of it is that much more frustrating for fans.

"I'm told both of these sides are very far apart on a deal. Quentin Grimes' agent, David Bauman told me today that it was the first time, today, that the Sixers made a formal, hard offer to Grimes as a restricted free agent," Charania said. "And Bauman added to me that Grimes will not be attending 76ers media day on Friday. He also will not be traveling with the team this week into Abu Dhabi for preseason."

Charania also noted that the addition of VJ Edgecombe in June's NBA Draft changed the dynamic of Philly's backcourt, and may have led to them seeing Grimes as more expendable than they did before. That's understandable considering Edgecombe's talent, but it's still disappointing news to hear given how electric Grimes was during the second half of this past season.

The 76ers are not close to an extension with Quentin Grimes

We saw Grimes utterly dominate during the second half of last season after arriving in Philadelphia. He averaged 21.9 points, 5.2 rebounds and 4.5 assists in 28 games played. His 44-point game against the Warriors gave Sixers fans an exciting glimpse of how he can take over a game when needed.

It's reasonable to think a player like Edgecombe might change your calculus a little bit, but this still isn't a good look for the 76ers. You acquired Grimes and gave up assets because you believed in his upside. To now delay his extension sends the message that you're no longer prioritizing him.

The fact that Grimes is not attending media day and won't travel for the preseason games in Abu Dhabi only adds insult to injury. Even if there's good reason for it, this situation appears from the outside to be one where trust could be fracturing.

For a player who showed he belonged and believed in his new role on this team, this kind of treatment is going to have the potential to affect Grimes' mindset, his willingness to extend and maybe even on-court chemistry with his teammates. The two sides can still hash things out and make peace, but it isn't looking great at the moment.
