With the offseason having already begun, the Philadelphia 76ers front office can now officially act on their lookout for the possible changes they can implement to the roster. Starting with the draft and moving onto free agency, it is highly possible that this team will look a lot different when the following campaign begins a handful of months from now.
Be that as it may, the 76ers are unlikely to make a drastic shift when it comes to their core, which feels set at this point. Their star-studded quartet composed by Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey, Paul George, and VJ Edgecombe will most probably return as constructed. Any NBA team could do much worse than have those four players co-pilot it, but for Philly, that might entail an actual plateau.
Once again, Philly will parade one of the most talented rosters on paper next season, although that is quite the restrictive viewpoint in that regard. Beyond their "core four," this team does not really have much. As such, it almost feels like this team is headed to a largely similar ending next season with how things currently stand.
The 76ers could face a similar fate next season with their core staying the same
Talent is not the issue for the 76ers, but more than any other team, their collective ceiling is heavily depending on factors that are tethered to their best players.
As everyone knows, Embiid does and will always carry a colossal asterisk with him with regard to his health. He is nearly guaranteed to miss significant chunks of the season due to injuries and load management, and as the best player on the team, the group will go where he takes them.
George is of the same ilk in that he has missed more games than he has appeared in over the last couple of seasons. He is also already 36 years old, and his decline in the last two years can only be expected to subsist.
Maxey is perhaps the safest of the four in that he is not an injury-prone player. Coming off an All-NBA season, he will carry the team on his back in the regular season moving forward, although there remains some concerns about his capability to function as the nominal alpha on a bona fide championship contender.
Edgecombe is the wildcard. If he gets to accelerate his growth starting next season, the 76ers might just be able to flip the script and pull off a surprise deep playoff run.
These factors will heavily determine the fate of the 76ers next season. However, given that their core is nearly everything they have, this team, at this juncture, cannot reasonably be expected to outdo their finish from the recently concluded campaign with much variance, if at all. Hence, the ball is now in the hads of the front office to make the necessary changes that can mitigate the risks associated with their nucleus while elevating their collective ceiling altogether.
