76ers may have already lost the biggest battle of the offseason

This is definitely not an ideal outcome for the 76ers.

Even before the 2026 NBA Draft (and the offseason) officially begins, the Philadelphia 76ers might have already lost the biggest battle of the summer. After months of dilly-dallying and tiresome guessworks, the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga has finally reached its conclusion, and the outcome definitely aggrieves the team such that they will end up on the losing end despite not being a direct participant in the bidding war.

In the end, Giannis got what he wanted as the Heat managed to outdo the Celtics and other reported suitors for the two-time Most Valuable Player. Now, Miami is looking all the more formidable next season and they are just starting off this summer. Well, that is certainly not the result the 76ers were hoping for as an idle spectator.

True enough, Philadelphia does not have a direct interest in what unfolded between the Bucks and the Heat. However, like the rest of the teams out in the East, the desired outcome was for Giannis to either stay in Milwaukee and the sinking boat therein, or to head to the Western Conference in order to make the race easier. Well, that ship has clearly sailed now.

The 76ers officially tally their first major loss of the offseason

Prior to getting their hands on the Greek Freak, Miami was staring at a fate no team ever wanted –– to be stuck in the league's purgatory. The Heat were simply not good enough to carve out meaningful success in the playoffs, but they were far from terrible enough to get into position for a high lottery pick (prior to the rule change).

But now that they have acquired Antetokounmpo, the Heat will be one of the early favorites in the East. Joel Embiid and the 76ers will definitely have their hands full dealing with Miami next season as the two-time MVP will be surrounded by the likes of Bam Adebayo, Andrew Wiggins, and Norman Powell.

That Antetokounmpo-Adebayo frontcourt will especially be a trek to deal with. Even if Embiid is out there healthy, the 76ers will not have the usual advantage they enjoy over most other teams. Clearly, from a competitive standpoint, Philly will be one of the early casualties of this blockbuster trade.

Now, the ball in the court of the 76ers brain trust. If anything, Miami's monumental accomplishment in trading for Giannis only puts them in a blender. The pressure is now on, and there is no other choice for Philly but to deliver this summer.
