Free agency will be of paramount impotance for the Philadelphia 76ers in the coming offseason. While they will not have the kind of financial ammo they enjoyed in recent years, the front office should still be able to revel in the ample roster of players who are available for taking in the open market. To that effect, one player they could look to add is Jock Landale.
Landale, who spent this season with the Grizzlies before getting shipped to the Hawks at the trade deadline, will be an unrestricted free agent this summer. He was pretty serviceable in his fifth year as a pro, averaging 10.6 points, 5.7 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per outing in 22.1 minutes a night. He was one of the better backup bigs in the league all year long, and he will surely command a lot of interest among teams in need of an imposing presence on their second units.
The 76ers are certainly a team that fits that bill. With Joel Embiid still expected to be heavily managed moving forward, which will surely mean a ton of missed games, the front office has no other choice but to keep bolstering their depth at the center position. Landale, with his skill set and physicality, figures to be someone who can finally help them address their longstanding woes off the bench.
Jock Landale would be a dream fit for the 76ers off the bench
Andre Drummond will be hitting the open market this offseason, and while he was pretty reliable this season, the 76ers could be better off with a more secure option to fill the stretch-five role he somehow filled up this season. Landale has that in his game and then some, which should make him an attractive option for Philly.
Landale shot 38.3 percent from three-point range this season, which solidifies him as a bona fide stretch five who can make life way easier for the team’s litany of shot creators and rim runners. Despite his lack of athleticism and bounce, he has good court sense, and his feel for the game is noticeable on the offensive end.
The 76ers have not had a backup big who can be counted on to score in the post, much less fire away with consistency from rainbow country. That makes Landale all the more sensible for the team’s brain trust to target. Even better, he is not expected to command a heavy salary in the open market.
