The Philadelphia 76ers are not facing as much pressure this year compared to previous seasons when it comes to making a deep run in the playoffs. Be that as it may, those beliefs are largely external. Within the franchise, the win-now edict remains spreadeagled across the board, so an early playoff exit will not be something they will gladly take no matter what the circumstances are.
In fact, drastic changes could ensue if the 76ers flame out early once again. This time, that shift could involve –– if not revolve around –– Nick Nurse, who has become a popular target of blame in Philly. And if that does come to fruition, the front office could actually chase an unthinkable name in the coaching free agency pool in the form of Steve Kerr.
Yes, you read that right. The four-time champion head coach is widely believed to have already coached his final game for the Warriors when they got jettisoned from the playoffs in their second play-in contest. As such, Kerr could very well end up being available for hiring, and teams will certainly flock to try and woo him into their respective programs.
The 76ers could have an unthinkable coaching target if they drop the hammer on Nick Nurse
For now, Kerr has not yet been officially axed by the Warriors, although his contract is already up. Golden State is reportedly trying to set the framework for another multi-year commitment from him, but from what can be gleaned from his posturing as of late, their partnership seems to flirting toward an official divorce.
The 76ers could very well do the same with Nurse, albeit they would be the ones to forcibly do the axing. The champion head coach has not been as good as hoped since stepping foot in Philly, and a lot of that can be tossed up to his medicore in-game management, which was supposedly his strength.
Now, why would the 76ers even entertain the thought of replacing Nurse with Kerr? Naysayers can raise a valid point that the latter is even more dogmatic and firmer in his ways than the former. Kerr is likewise not exactly known for being a player developer. However, there is no doubt that the people management aspect of coaching is his biggest strength.
It would be odd for Daryl Morey to hire Steve Kerr, who was a thorn in his side for a lot of years, but if the 76ers do part ways with Nick Nurse, that would be the perfect opportunity to make such a groundbreaking change on the sidelines.
