The Philadelphia 76ers are heading into next season as one of the league’s most interesting teams. Obviously, they just enjoyed a big summer. They traded for Jaylen Brown in a deal with the Boston Celtics, and shortly after that, they signed LeBron James in free agency. But Tyrese Maxey may be the most important guy on the team.
Philly has a ton of personalities to manage next season. Obviously, James and Brown are two of the biggest, right alongside Joel Embiid, who has been in town for years. But Maxey, he’s the guy who could be the glue. He’s always been one of the happier, joyful guys in the NBA, and that’s the exact type of energy that could help Philly gel together.
But it’s more than that, too. When you combine Maxey’s personality with his ability to play off the ball effectively, he’s the one guy in Philly who has everything in him to make it all work.

Throughout the course of his career, James has almost always been the best player on his team. And with it, he’s often had the power to help… direct the front office in the direction he felt was best.
Then, there’s Brown. Last year was his first real chance to be the best player on a playoff team. Jayson Tatum was out while recovering from a ruptured Achilles, so Brown led the Celtics to 56 wins.
Embiid has been the best player on the 76ers for almost a decade now. He won an MVP award, and though he hasn’t done too much in the postseason, his status as the best player has been obvious.
That’s three guys all coming together who could struggle to give up control. Then, there’s Maxey. A generally joyful guy who has plenty of experience acting as the secondary player.
Maxey is an elite three-point shooter. He’s great at creating for himself and others, but his deep-range shot and ability to space the floor mean he should be comfortable acting as a third or fourth option on most nights.
If there’s anyone who can help James, Brown, and Embiid get along and stay on the same page, it’s a guy like Maxey. He seems like the type of guy who is good at getting people on the same page.
Add that to his on-court abilities, and it makes Maxey the perfect person for the Sixers to turn to when it comes to everyone getting along on and off the court.
