Labaron Philon Jr. stunned fans in his NBA Summer League debut with a performance that showcased all of his mouthwatering potential. However, despite the Philadelphia 76ers' rookie hogging the spotlight, Johni Broome and Dante Maddox Jr. also made their own individual case to be a part of Mike Gansey's future vision for the franchise -- proving the Sixers don't just boast established superstars; they own some exciting young talent.
Labaron Philon Jr. should excite the 76ers fans
With Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe on the roster, Philon is not going to be a starter in his first year in the league, but with the elite ball-handling and dangerous shooting ability he displayed during his summer league debut, the rookie can make a huge impact from a secondary role.
Philon was all action from the word go against the Detroit Pistons. The 20-year-old displayed impressive offensive versatility as he chalked up 18 points and seven assists, while shooting 40 percent from deep.
This contribution may not be against All-NBA caliber opponents, but his 18 shot attempts on the night prove that the first-round pick out of Alabama will relentlessly pursue a bucket no matter how many minutes Nick Nurse grants him on the floor. He may be inexperienced, but this is the attitude the Philadelphia 76ers need from an impact bench player, and the fact that he is still a raw talent makes this acquisition all the more exciting.
Broome and Maddox are ready to ignite their Sixers career
After being selected 35th overall by the Philadelphia 76ers last year, Johni Broome's rookie year was far from spectacular for several reasons. Most notably, a lateral meniscus tear in his right knee halted his development, leaving questions surrounding his future with the franchise.
In his return to the court in the Sixers' summer league triumph over the Pistons, the former Auburn center recorded 19 points, 13 rebounds, and two blocks, while shooting 50 percent from the floor. This efficiency may not seem impressive for a big; nevertheless, four of his missed attempts were from 3-point range -- a shot he will not be required to take when on the floor with Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown.
His physical dominance in the paint and his resilient defensive prowess could keep him in good standing as the season approaches. If Broome can prove these are consistent features of his game, there is no reason why he can't be part of the conversation to become Joel Embiid's understudy, given that his competition is far from finished products.
Maddox is an intriguing prospect who is fighting to salvage his NBA career, or in some people's eyes, get it started in the first place. At 24 years of age, the dynamic guard must make the most of every small opportunity he is granted at the highest level, and he certainly did that in his latest summer league outing.
After a season in the Belgian Pro Basketball League, Maddox oozed confidence as he worked in tandem with Labaron Philon Jr. He recorded a team-high 21 points while shooting 53.8 percent from the floor and 66.7 percent from deep.
Each of these three prospects faces different scenarios in terms of their future. However, if they can all make the most of their situations and prove their worth under Mike Gansey's regime, the trio could have an important role in the 76ers' immediate future.
VJ Edgecombe may be the obvious young star on the lips of experts around the league, but the Philadelphia 76ers have more young prospects to boast about than that -- and fans of the franchise should be excited about what the future holds.
