Afflicted with a seemingly team-wide epidemic, the Philadelphia 76ers did more than just cough as they went for a total collapse in brutal fashion, losing to the lowly Brooklyn Nets to fall to 16-12 on the season. Tyrese Maxey was ice cold and turned in his worst game of the season. Even a great Joel Embiid outing could not save them.
Amidst their post-game disappointment, the 76ers front office made a subtle addition to the roster, bringing in former first-round pick Marjon Beauchamp on a two-way deal. As reported by The Athletic’s Tony Jones, they parted ways with undrafted guard Hunter Sallis as a result to free up one two-way spot.
Beauchamp was originally signed by the 76ers to an Exhibit 10 deal in mid October, but the team eventually cut him just a few days later. Now, he gets to have another shot at an audition for the 76ers, although he will first have to prove his mettle in the G-League.
The 76ers add Marjon Beauchamp to the roster
Selected with the 24th overall pick by the Milwaukee Bucks in the 2022 NBA Draft, Beauchamp undoubtedly had promise as a big wing scorer who can get to his spots with ease and create from all three levels. Unfortunately, with the Bucks having an entrenched rotation of wings back then, he just could not crack their rotation, which culminated in him struggling to get real on-court reps.
A 6’7” swingman, Beauchamp does bring some much-needed size to the 76ers’ artillery out in the perimeter. Of course, it is unrealistic to expect him to log rotation minutes anytime soon, but Philly needs all help it can get on that end.
That is more so the case given the current circumstances surrounding the team. The 76ers were so shorthanded that they had to play both Eric Gordon and Kyle Lowry considerable minutes against the Nets, and the result was as good as you might have expected.
Beauchamp will spend most of his time honing his skills in the G-League, although he has a good chance of getting called up to the regular roster often if the 76ers keep missing bodies due to injuries and/or ailments.
Anyway, it is good to see that the 76ers remain keen on maximizing their two-way spots. After all, they arguably have the best two-way player in the league in Dominick Barlow, with Jabari Walker likewise giving them value as a depth piece. Hopefully, Beauchamp ends up being of the same ilk.
