Philadelphia 76ers must be desperate for the team to finally give a resolution to their ongoing standstill with Quentin Grimes with regard to his restricted free agency. While this kind of a freeze is far from unexpected, the front office needs to have a clearer answer by now, lest they run the risk of not having a viable alternative plan if the push comes to shove and he somehow ends up leaving.
Grimes, who was wildly successful last season when he was cudgeled into a primary scoring role out of sheer necessity, has become too good to simply allow to walk away for nothing. And of course, it would be a terrible look for the front office to toss aside a player of that caliber, even if his stint ends up becoming a short one.
Philly is not alone on this train with most teams dealing with the same deadlock when it comes to their own restricted free agents, but the 76ers cannot abate their worries by the mere fact that it is a popular issue. The Grimes saga needs a closure sooner than later, and the longer this gets, the more adverse the effect would be on the team’s chemistry heading into the upcoming campaign.
Fortunately, the 76ers might have just gotten the most resolute update yet on Grimes’ free agency episode.
The 76ers get their most certain Quentin Grimes update yet
Philadelphia seems to finally have a clear timeline on when the Grimes saga will be resolved. According to NBA insider Jake Fischer on Bleacher Report, both camps are expected to come to terms on a new deal next month, and with July coming to a close in just a short while, his days of being a free agent should be numbered.
”I do not think we’re getting any resolution this week or in July for Quentin Grimes … The Sixers 100% want to bring back Grimes—they want him at a very strong number.”
The 76ers have not wavered in their interest on bringing Grimes back despite the team actually having the necessary cushion to absorb the prospect of him opting to test his mettle elsewhere thanks to their litany of talented guards in Tyrese Maxey, Jared McCain, and rookie VJ Edgecombe.
But with this update, fans can perhaps get a clearer sense of how the front office will oeprate moving forward. Contrary to what their reported stance indicates, save for the Grimes stuff, the 76ers still have a few things left on their predicted wishlist even if they do not admit it, and they cannot simply ride this group knowing that it strongly resembles last season’s squad which turned in a blatant disappointment.
Hopefully, both camps get to clear the smoke on this painstaking saga as this cannot subsist and spill into training camp.
