76ers rightfully refused to cap LeBron James, Joel Embiid vs Knicks

Minutes restriction? Not now.

As the Philadelphia 76ers prepared for their first battle of the 2026-2027 NBA season, ESPN's Shams Charania reported that the team planned to start the new hoops year off with a strict load management plan for stars such as Joel Embiid and LeBron James.

The NBA insider suggested that the Sixers "hope" to hold Embiid and James to "around 30 minutes" per game for at least the first few weeks of the season. The 76ers apparently didn't want to come out of the gate flooring it. It's really an understandable approach, considering the circumstances.

LeBron James is 41 and is coming off a season where he played in under 65 games for the first time since 2022-2023. The superstar forward was forced to debut several weeks into the 2025-2026 NBA season. It was an extremely rare occasion for LeBron to miss that much time. As he gets deeper into his career, James shouldn't be cranking out high minutes and high usage in game one of 82.

As for Joel Embiid, his injury concerns are well-documented. When you talk about 65 games, Embiid has crossed that threshold just twice in his career. He never touched 70 games in a single season, and hasn't exceeded 39 games in a year since 2022-2023. He probably won't play in back-to-backs again and will have a frequent minutes restriction at times throughout the season.

Did the Sixers stick to the rumored plan?

Not quite. Around 30? Fine. But capped? Definitely not. During the opener against the Knicks, LeBron James checked in for 34 minutes. As for Embiid, he was right behind him with 33 minutes.

Jaylen Brown and VJ Edgecombe matched for 35 minutes, while Tyrese Maxey reached 40.

Is that a mistake?

If the Sixers indeed wanted to avoid rolling out the two veterans for fewer than 30 minutes to start the season, then they showed poor discipline. However, this game should get a pass. It's just one of 82, but it's a tone-setter. Banner night in New York City--a game between two rivals. The Knicks wanted to find something to keep celebrating, and the 76ers wanted revenge for getting beat up and kicked out of the playoffs by the Knicks.

In the flow of the game, Nick Nurse decided that Joel Embiid's presence on both sides of the ball was needed. As for LeBron James, his high IQ is too valuable to stash away at times in a game like this. The stakes were higher than either team wanted to admit on Tuesday night. The Sixers treated it as such.

However, if the plan is to keep LeBron and Embiid capped in order to avoid pushing limits early on, then this can't become a trend. It's a great start, but the Sixers know that slow and steady will be key for this year's championship race.
