The Philadelphia 76ers will not really enjoy ample spending power this offseason thanks to their muddled and top-heavy payroll. As a result, it is now incumbent upon the front office, which is now led by new faces up top, to get creative with regard to improving the roster, especially on the margins.
To that effect, they might have just stumbled upon their next reclamation project. Jonathan Isaac has just been waived by the Magic, ending his tenure in Orlando which lasted nine years. The 28-year-old has played sparingly in recent years due to his injury concerns, and with his ball club doubling down on cutting costs, him being the casualty comes as a surprise to no one.
Be that as it may, the defensive-minded forward will most definitely fetch a lot of interest in the open market. Obviously, he will not command a lucrative price tag, especially since he got a huge chunk of his supposed full salary for next season anyway. To that effect, the 76ers should come knocking at his camp's door on a possible partnership.
The 76ers could target Jonathan Isaac in free agency as their next reclamation project
Isaac, who was the sixth overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, entered the league with tremendous upside as a defensive piece. True enough, he quickly proved himself as one of the premiere defenders in the league when healthy. That last part, however, has been far from a constant thing with him.
The Florida State product has missed 346 regular season games in his career so far while playing in just 328 contests. Essentially, he has not been in uniform more than he is available, which is easily the main reason why the Magic have already given up on the rangy forward.
Having said that, Isaac would be a good low-risk, high-reward target for teams in need of more bodies at the forward position, such as the 76ers. Philly currently has little resistance on the defensive end at forward, and Isaac certainly brings a lot of that to the table. Of course, his limitations on offense will limit his viability as a high-minute player, but as depth insurance, he should more than fine as a free agency pickup.
The 76ers have to be opportunistic this summer. Hence, they should take a flier on Jonathan Isaac, who remains a highly impressive defender when healthy. Given the team's lack of acuity on that end and their need for more big bodies, he figures to be a good pickup, especially given his low stature in the market at this juncture.
