After failing to secure a reunion with Matisse Thybulle, the Philadelphia 76ers should remain on the lookout for players who can help shore up their defense. Fortunately for them, the free agency market still has a highly desirable commodity who can provide exactly that in the form of Bruce Brown, who somehow remains available for plucking in the open market.
Bruce Brown has gotten lost in free agency
Seeing Brown have a rather dry market in free agency is certainly a strange development, especially since he was a key player for a contender last season and had already won a title with the Nuggets. As such, the 76ers have the opportunity to snag someone who can give them more championship and Finals experience, which they do not have an abundance of outside of newcomer Jaylen Brown.
While a bit undersized for a wing, Brown offers a lot of tenacity on the defensive end. There is a reason he became a tide-shifting contributor for Denver in their title run three years ago, and those are traits that the 76ers should value, given how their roster is currently constructed.
The 76ers could target Bruce Brown after missing out on Thybulle
Brown is at his best when he is entrenched in an auxiliary role where he is not burdened too much on the offensive end. That was on full display this past season when he averaged 7.9 points, 3.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists for the Nuggets in 24.4 minutes a night off the bench.
The 76ers are already littered with uber-talented shot creators and scorers, even in their second unit. That makes it all the more important for the front office to seek some balance by pursuing high-impact players who do not need the rock to affect the ball game, and Brown definitely fits the bill as a Swiss Army knife of sorts.
One could even argue that Brown would be a better option than Thybulle anyway. While the latter is probably a tad better as a one-on-one stopper, the former is a more foolproof option on the offensive end with his smart cutting and secondary playmaking. Having converted on 38.5 percent of his triples last season, he is also the more reliable three-point shooter.
Right now, the 76ers have their sights set on someone much, much flashier. However, the offseason is still young, and the team will have to shore up the more unexplored parts of the roster. That makes Bruce Brown a highly appealing target for them in the open market, and pursuing him would not force them to break the bank.
