76ers veteran may have played his last game for the franchise

Time for this vet to say goodbye, probably.

The Eric Gordon experience for the Philadelphia 76ers has been nothing short of unremarkable. The veteran guard has been a complete afterthought since landing in Philly, and now, it is high time for the franchise to part ways with him, especially given the fact that the right opportunity for them to do so has already come.

With most trade restrictions in the league having been lifted a couple of days ago, teams should now be more active when it comes to wheeling and dealing. For the 76ers, that means that they will finally get the chance to eject some of their more undesirable players on the roster, and Gordon definitely tops that list.

No offense to the veteran Gordon, who has had a very fruitful career, but his time in Philly should have already been over months ago. He is barely even sniffing the hardwood, and there is just no way for him to get real minutes anymore given the stage where he is at in his career.

Eric Gordon has definitely overstayed his welcome with the 76ers

Gordon’s numbers do not look necessarily terrible at first blush, especially when taking into account the very reason why he was brought to Philly — three-point shooting. Last season, he drained 40.9 percent of his three-pointers. So far this season, he has canned 62.5 percent of his attempts from rainbow territory.

Those figures are mere paper tigers, though. After all, they come at a meager sample size, and the truth of the matter is that Gordon no longer has any value elsewhere. He is a tenured three-pointer and nothing more.

Gordon has not played in almost a month, and the coaching staff seems to have so much respect for him that he is not even getting on the floor for garbage time duty. As such, there is no more reason for him to stay on the roster, especially with the 76ers needing to go after players who have more sensible fits on the squad.

Now, it is extremely unlikely that another team goes out of their way strike a deal to snag him. The 76ers will have to make him a pot sweetener — if you can even call him that at this point — in a trade, lest they have no other choice but to cut him.

Eric Gordon has had a great career — there is no disputing that. But the 76ers can no longer afford to play retirement home for him, and both camps would be much better off cutting ties with each other.
