The Philadelphia 76ers are close to getting the final word on LeBron James' free agency decision.

Many in Philly are excited about the idea of LeBron James teaming up with Tyrese Maxey, Joel Embiid, Jaylen Brown, and VJ Edgecombe to form one of--if not the best--starting fives in the NBA.

But this is Philadelphia after all. You can bet that the scary side of the situation has been revealed, and a nightmare hypothetical is out there for everybody to think twice about wanting one of the greatest basketball players of all time to land on their favorite team.

What's the scary side to LeBron joining the Sixers?

Eliot Shorr-Parks of 94WIP doesn't believe that the addition of LeBron helps the Sixers win. Why? A few reasons. Let's break them down.

"It becomes a dream team, right? And we have seen how dream teams work. That is too many changes to the team, too many personalities, too much to figure out," ESP said.

For non-Eagles fans, this references the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles. The Eagles added some massive names in free agency, leaving the city excited to new levels. The then-backup quarterback Vince Young declared the Eagles to be a "dream team." The results? An 8-8 record and missing the playoffs.

Different sport, different era. Don't let the 2011 Philadelphia Eagles dictate how you think about the 2026 NBA offseason.

"I think as currently constructed, they can compete for a title, right? Like, I think they have a perfect setup. Joel only plays sometimes, Jaylen's the main guy, Maxey is great as a number two, VJ fits in. It all meshes. I know LeBron's skill set helps, but LeBron is not going to be a role player here."

A little contradictory, but there is a point here worth discussing. I would say that the Sixers should probably stop at "LeBron's skill set helps," and be happy. If he helps, then why hesitate at all? If it doesn't work in the end, then you move on after paying the guy a minimum salary for a year. It's like getting a massively discounted lottery ticket. You might not get rich, but it won't put money in your pocket if you don't get it.

"I think it would be a massive distraction, and I have no interest in it," Parks added. "That would be a massive distraction to everybody. The entire year would be about LeBron."

We heard this a lot back in 2018, when there was a pinch of hope that James would avoid the Los Angeles Lakers and sign in Philly. It would become "LeBron's team." And in this case, the spotlight would be brighter than ever, as it might end up being the farewell tour for the forward. I can't fault anybody for feeling like it's not Sixers basketball if LeBron dominates the storylines.

But Sixers basketball hasn't been about winning anything significant in a very long time. If this is the type of gamble that it takes to reach the top, then embrace the King James show in Philadelphia.
