Heading into the 2026 NBA season opener on the road against the New York Knicks, the Philadelphia 76ers made an announcement regarding the sophomore guard, VJ Edgecombe.
With the deadline to decide on Edgecombe's third-year option approaching, the Sixers decided not to wait it out. They know exactly how much value Edgecombe brings to the table, and they are locking him in for at least another year.
VJ Edgecombe contract update
The Sixers are set to pay Edgecombe $11.6 million for the 2026-2027 NBA season. The Sixers had until Halloween night to pick up his $12.2 million contract for the 2027-2028 run. They announced they will do so, which is an obvious move for the club that continues to express its confidence in Edgecombe as a cornerstone player for years to come.
Next fall, the 76ers will be in a similar--slightly more expensive boat with Edgecombe. Before October 31, 2027, they'll have to decide what to do with Edgecombe's $15.4 million option. If he looks like he did last season or better, the Sixers will gladly pick that up, while starting to think about his first big break in the NBA.
For the time being, the 76ers can appreciate the value of the deal he's on now.
What kind of season is on the way?
The 76ers loaded up the roster compared to last season. Paul George was swapped out for Jaylen Brown after his MVP-caliber season, and LeBron James entered the picture after he spent eight years with the Los Angeles Lakers.
Most analysts from afar look at Edgecombe as somebody who could take a step back as the Sixers' starting five adds more star-level cooks to the kitchen. If training camp and the preseason is a realistic indicator, Edgecombe doesn't seem like a player that's going to regress in 2026-2027.
One thing that Edgecombe proved during his rookie season is that he plays with a fearless confidence. He knew that as the No. 3 pick for the Sixers, he had to show value as a day-one contributor. The former Baylor product earned a starting role alongside Tyrese Maxey for the first 75 games of his career.
With an average of 35.0 minutes per game, Edgecombe shot 43.8% from the field and hit on 35.4% of his shots from three, to average 16.0 points per game. Along with his scoring, the young guard came down with 5.6 rebounds per game and dished out 4.2 assists per game.
It's a long season ahead, but the 76ers remain confident in Edgecombe's upcoming campaign. If he can stand out while surrounded by this level of talent, that contract value will only go North.
