Entering the season, their cushion behind Joel Embiid was a major point of concern for the 76ers. While they did not necessarily lack options for his main backup off the bench, whether their fleet of big men was of high quality was a big question for the squad. That remains a flimsy area for the group, but for now, Adem Bona might have just locked down the critical role following his most recent performance.
With Joel Embiid getting the night off in Philly's second leg of a back-to-back, Bona got to enjoy extended time on the court. The third-year big man ended up playing 25 minutes, finishing the game with six points, 13 rebounds, and three blocks. The 76ers might have notched their first loss of the season in that affair, but Bona's strong performance was a major silver lining that might have just helped him cement his role as the go-to center for the team off the bench.
Adem Bona makes a huge statement after strong game for the 76ers
The 76ers did not have a firm answer as to which big man will be their primary choice to spell Embiid off the bench, but it is becoming increasingly likely that Bona will assume that critical post. That is made even clearer by the fact that he has very little competition right now. Ariel Hukporti is out for the season with his Achilles injury, while Dominick Barlow and Tacko Fall have not yet suited up for the squad due to injuries.
Now, if Bona can sustain that level of defensive activity and aptitude on the boards, the 76ers should have a major headache off their plate. After all, he also arms the team with a vertical threat for lobs while likewise being the most prolific shot-blocker on the roster. Sure, his positioning can be off at times, and he can still be prone to fouling, but he has all the tools to be a reliable defensive anchor for the second unit.
To be fair, the coaching staff had always intended for the young big man to become their go-to backup center. Last season, Nick Nurse had him assume that role for a considerable chunk of the season before reverting to Andre Drummond late in their campaign. But now that the veteran center is gone, it is naturally incumbent upon Bona to man that important job.
The 76ers do not need Bona to be a flashy player for them. As long as he can do the dirty work and provide that jolt on defense and on the boards no matter the amount of minutes he gets, the coaches will keep going back to him. After all, compared to the other big men on the roster, he already has a head start this season.
