Bulls trade suggestion should serve 76ers a reminder about appreciating luxuries

Don't trade the future.

The Philadelphia 76ers are showing signs of being wounded at the center position. Joel Embiid might be healthy now, but history says he's going to miss time in 2026-2027. Adem Bona has yet to debut in the preseason as he recovers from a foot injury. Meanwhile, Ariel Hukporti is going to miss the entire season due to a torn Achilles.

Naturally, the sellers will start dangling bigs on the block, even if the Sixers don't intend to make any real changes until December at the earliest. The Chicago Bulls have already been tabbed as a team that should be in close contact with the 76ers in due time, since they will have centers available.

The 76ers shouldn't turn down any future call from the Bulls, because they do have realistic targets the Sixers should keep an eye on (hello, Jalen Smith). But when it comes to compensation, that's where the Sixers will have to remember to balance the now and the later.

When Bulls On SI discusses a potential conversation between Chicago and Philly's front offices, there is a rather ambitious trade target the Bulls might have their eyes on: the rookie Labaron Philon Jr.

Since the Sixers were described as having a busy backcourt, there was a suggestion that Philon could start to look more like a luxury than a necessity. That's an on-base assumption. However, the Sixers need to appreciate their luxuries, even when they are squeezing through their tight championship window. The Bulls can be ambitious all they want, but Philon shouldn't touch the block unless the 76ers get desperate.

Find the balance

The 76ers are a superteam, and they should have a championship-or-bust mentality. However, some of these key names--even in the busy backcourt--aren't going to be around for long.

LeBron James' two-year deal could easily be one-and-done. The same could be said for Anfernee Simons, who has a rather discounted $6.3 million player option for next season waiting. The veteran Kentavious Caldwell-Pope will see his minimum deal expire at the end of the year, leaving the Sixers potentially freeing up three rotation spots right there alone.

Philon was poised to play a day-one role before the team reached for the stars in July. He might not have a nightly role this season, but that could change for his sophomore effort. Of course, a young first-round guard might appeal to the Bulls, as they have the luxury of developing players without the pressure to win right away.

However, the Sixers should rightfully understand that their championship dreams don't hinge on a backup center. They need to appreciate Philon as a luxury, rather than drive up his value just to move him for what's seen as a necessity. The Sixers have what they need. Only bad health and a lack of chemistry will ultimately prevent them from reaching their goal.
