Following a depressing season, the Philadelphia 76ers are already being served with resounding demands to make meaningful changes to the team. With their championship window rapidly closing down, the front office has to approach the offseason with appropriate fear and desperation, lest they accelerate the demise of their chances to snag the title.
For the most part, fans have been steadfast in clamoring for yet another roster shake-up, especially when it comes to the team’s nucleus. However, realistically speaking, that is unlikely to happen this year. Unless the perfect opportunity arises, it is probable that the front office will want to see what this squad can do at full strength.
However, aside from desired changes to the team’s deck, there are also calls for the 76ers to make a changing of the guards up top, primarily with Daryl Morey, president of basketball operations, and Nick Nurse, the man on the sidelines for the club. In fact, as can be gleaned from recent, shocking happenstances in the league, such plea seems pretty seasonal.
The 76ers plan to make a change that fans did not ask for
Unfortunately for Morey and Nurse’s detractors, they seem to have retained the blessing of the franchise to keep working for the team. In the team’s exit press conference, Morey himself said that he and the veteran tactician are expected to return next season.
Nevertheless, sources say that the 76ers are eyeing a change for their 2025-26 campaign, albeit in an area fans never expected, as the expectation is that Nurse’s coaching staff will look much different next season.
Currently, the Nurse-led 76ers coaching staff consists of Rico Hines, Doug West, Bobby Jackson, Coby Karl, Bryan Gates, Matt Brase, John Corbacio, and Fab Flournoy. Assistant coaches are often chosen according to their ties with the head coach, so fans could perhaps see some of his former staffers sit with him on the bench.
But in all honesty, by itself, changing some or all of the current assistant coaches does not project to have a drastic impact on the team. After all, the coaching staff, despite its often puzzling decisions this season, should not get the biggest slice of the blame pie.
Nevertheless, with this apparent direction, the hope is that Nick Nurse will be able to bring out the best out of the roster next season with a stronger crop of brains on his ears. After all, the Philadelphia 76ers need every kind of improvement to return to relevance.
