The Philadelphia 76ers, like the rest of the league, are probably occupied by the musings going on in the trade market with the deadline coming up in just a tad over a couple of weeks. However, that should not prevent the front office from looking ahead to what could end up becoming real options for them in the buyout market, which often gets crowded after the All-Star break.

That is more so the case given that a former All-Star might just be able via buyout. According to The Athletic’s Josh Robbins (subscription required), Khris Middleton is unlikely to get shipped by the Wizards before the trade deadline. As such, the most viable resolution is an eventual contract buyout which will make the former All-Star available for plucking.

The 76ers, still in dire need of consistent production from the perimeter and some more playmaking juice, should strongly pursue Middleton the moment Washington officially lets him go. That would simply be an ultra-rare opportunity they cannot gloss over, as the veteran would make a world of difference in Philly as a complementary piece.

Khris Middleton would be an amazing buyout target for the 76ers

Philadelphia has more rotation-caliber players at the forward positions this time around compared to last season, but their options behind Paul George still need bolstering. Kelly Oubre Jr., his primary backup, has become wildly inconsistent as of late, and a lot of fans are calling for an upgrade in view of his expiring deal.

But regardless of what happens with Oubre, the 76ers should aggressively go after Middleton if he indeed ends up being available. While he is a glaring red flag at this point due to nagging injuries, he is still a very solid scorer and secondary playmaker who can elevate the team’s floor in the playoffs with his championship verve.

Of course, Middleton is nowhere near the caliber of player he once was. In fact, his raw numbers this season are so grim you would have to go back to his rookie campaign to find worse figures. Still, he is a proven veteran who produces especially well in high-stakes situations — something the 76ers would love to have off the bench.

It also should not cost the 76ers an arm and a leg to lure Middleton in if he is bought out by the Wizards. As such, there is very little risk in pursuing him despite the high rewards that could ensue.

While they are already teeming with talent, another proven name would not hurt. The Philadelphia 76ers are desperate to make a deep playoff run this season, and snagging Khris Middleton off the buyout market could end up becoming a midseason hat trick that can tremendously raise their floor.
