Even De'Aaron Fox can't save 76ers from horrifying Joel Embiid reality

Joel Embiid's contract is way worse than De'Aaron Fox's.

The Philadelphia 76ers shocked the Boston Celtics in the playoffs this year, but their run quickly ended in the second round. They ran into the eventual champions, falling to the New York Knicks. New York took down the San Antonio Spurs in the NBA Finals, where De’Aaron Fox absolutely choked. But even he can’t dethrone Joel Embiid’s title as having the worst contract in the NBA.

Immediately after the NBA Finals, people began labeling Fox’s contract as the worst in the NBA. However, Embiid’s is still worse. The Sixers still have to deal with paying Embiid a ton of money, even though Embiid can barely stay on the court. At least Fox can play.

No matter how badly Fox played in the Finals – and it was rough – Embiid’s contract is still worse.

Fox is going to make a lot of money in San Antonio over the next four years. The Spurs owe him over $220 million over that time frame, which definitely isn’t ideal.

The whole conversation about how bad his contract is came to a head after the Spurs’ Game 5 loss to the Knicks (which wrapped up the Finals). Fox shot an ugly 3-of-15 from the field and 1-of-8 from deep range.

And since the Spurs already have Dylan Harper and Stephon Castle – whom they will have to pay eventually – it’s definitely not ideal that they are paying Fox as much as they are.

But at least he’s on the court. At least Fox can play. He can definitely bounce back from his brutal performances in this year’s playoffs. Embiid can barely stay on the floor.

Embiid has three more years left in his current contract (including a player option in the final year, which Embiid will almost certainly pick up). He will make $58.1 million next season, $62.7 million the season after, and $67.4 million the season after (the player option).

The Spurs aren’t being inhibited by Fox’s contract right now. They just made the NBA Finals. They can do it again with this exact same roster – Fox included.

The Sixers are going to struggle to build a championship-caliber roster in the next few years because of how much money they have on the books – Embiid is preventing Philly from building a winner.

They cannot afford to build a roster around Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe because of how much money Embiid is making. That is why his contract is worse than Fox’s. No one wants Embiid. No one will trade for him.

Embiid’s contract is the worst in the NBA by far.
