The Philadelphia 76ers have had a lot of success with their draft picks as of late, but they also have had their fair share of misses. One of those is Charles Bassey, whom they drafted with the 53rd overall pick five years ago. He did not really play much for the franchise and has since bounced around the league as a journeyman. However, with a possibly bigger role for him next season, he might just have the opportunity to make the team regret not giving him more run before.
Bassey, who signed with the Warriors to the tune of a one-year deal this offseason, is primed to have his most prominent role yet as a pro in the league. After all, Golden State is pretty thin at the center position, which gives the former 76ers big man a prime opportunity to carve out a consistent role for himself in Steve Kerr's rotation as their resident solution at center off the bench.
Charles Bassey could finally make the 76ers regret letting him go early
The 76ers trotted Bassey out for just 23 games in his rookie campaign, and he was eventually waived before the start of his sophomore year. After that, he played in San Antonio for three seasons, although he failed to bag a bigger role with the Spurs due to his inconsistency and injuries.
This past season, he suited up for four different ball clubs, starting the campaign with the Grizzlies, appearing in a cameo for the 76ers once more, playing briefly for the Celtics, and finally ending the season with the Warriors.
Golden State seems to have liked what they saw from Bassey in his very brief stint with them last season, so much so that they handed him a one-year deal. That could very well end up becoming a good value signing for the Warriors, especially since they added an infusion of young blood to their aging center rotation.
Right now, the Warriors have Kristaps Porzingis and Al Horford manning the 5 spot for next season, which is quite precarious in the sense that both players have red flags the team just cannot ignore. Porzingis has always been injury-prone, while Horford is one of the oldest players in the league. This is precisely where Bassey can make and can leave his mark in Golden State.
Right now, the 76ers still do not have a firm option for their backup center spot. As such, if Charles Bassey plays as well as he did for the Warriors during his fleeting stint last season, he could certainly make the team that drafted him wish that they held onto him longer, especially since they technically reunited with him just this past season.
