Former 76ers guard fading fast as free agency leaves him in the cold

Not good for the ex-Sixer.

Free agency has been sweet for a lot of parties this offseason, but that is certainly not the case with the Philadelphia 76ers. With the upcoming 2025-26 campaign just a hair above a month away, the roster looks relatively the same. No one will be penciling them in as a major winner this summer, that’s for sure.

The 76ers, however, most certainly have it better than others. Case in point? Look no further than a familiar face for the franchise, who still remains without a new home in the league with the season slowly creeping in.

De’Anthony Melton, who played in Philly for two seasons from 2022 to 2024, still remains widely available for picking in the open market. He briefly spent last season with the Warriors where he enjoyed a major role, but an early season-ending injury flipped his fortunes as he now sees his NBA future in a murky situation.

Unfortunately, his time to find a new taker is slowly running out, in which case he may be forced to tap into unforeseen options to resume playing.

Former 76ers guard De’Anthony Melton still has not been signed in free agency

Melton had a couple of suitors early on during the initial waves of free agency with the Warriors and Lakers expressing their interest about bringing him in, but as one might have already known, those have not materialized into an actual NBA contract.

Now, Golden State is believed to still be in contact with his camp about a potential deal, although talks have been delayed thanks to the Warriors still being preoccupied with their troubling standstill with Jonathan Kuminga.

However, while the Warriors are apparently still interested in having him return to the team, nothing is guaranteed nor promised to him. Other free agents such as Al Horford and Gary Payton III are also linked to Golden State. At the very worst, Melton could be the odd man out.

While he is coming off a brutal injury, Melton is still one of the true three-and-D guards in the NBA. Not only is he a reiable three-point shooter, but he can seamlessly function as a secondary release valve on offense while being willing to take on tough defensive assignments.

Hopefully, the former 76ers guard quickly finds a new home. After all, he is way too good not to be on the NBA hardwood — and fans know that very well.
