The Philadelphia 76ers parted ways with Trendon Watford after just one season –– an outcome that did not look ideal, but was necessary for the group in light of their blockbuster offseason. Unfortunately for him, the main wave of free agency has been over for quite some time now. Yet, he remains without a home for next season.
Even worse, there has been a complete dearth of entries in the rumor mill pointing to another ball club expressing serious interest in bringing him into the fold. It is probably not a good sign that the open market does not really have good options at forward at this juncture, yet Watford has not been brought up as a name to monitor for the very few teams still touting an open roster spot.
The 76ers basically threw Trendon Watford to the wolves in free agency
Watford tallied 6.5 points, 3.3 rebounds, and 2.5 assists per outing while playing just 16.3 minutes a night this past season. Clearly, his all-around production is an actual facet that he was able to showcase just recently. That makes it all the more strange that he is not commanding considerable noise out in the open market.
Sure, critics may point to his lack of three-point shooting (20 percent on just 0.9 attempts a night last season) as the primary driving force behind him being stuck in free agency limbo, but he is not far removed from being a respectable shooter in low volume. There is still hope that he can regain his three-point shot, especially since the 76ers simply did not have him operate much without the ball and deployed him as a quasi-ball handler instead.
Training camp is still a couple of months away, so there is still ample time for Watford to audition for teams. However, the odds of him getting a guaranteed deal and having to avoid the uncertainty surrounding a training camp contract are now low. He could very well start the 2026-27 season outside the league at this point.
Trendon Watford still has the makings and stylings of a productive role player in the league with his two-way game and all-around skill set. In all honesty, there are not a lot of gaping holes in his game. Hopefully, the former 76ers forward can get a team to sign him, as it would be an utter waste to not see him housed in an NBA roster moving forward.
