Former Philadelphia 76ers star Ben Simmons has been eyeing a return to the league for quite some time now, and a few teams have already invited him to a private workout to see whether they would be interested in bringing him in for the 2026-27 season. To that effect, it seems like he is on the right track to pulling off a successful bid, as it was reported that Simmons "looked fantastic" in his workout with the Sacramento Kings.
Simmons sat for an entire year this past season after deciding against signing with a new ball club last summer in order to focus on his rehab and work on his game. In all fairness to him, his workouts this offseason were well-documented, and his basketball activities likewise shot up, even suiting up for the Australian National Basketball Team's minicamp ahead of the FIBA World Cup qualifiers.
Ben Simmons gets encouraging update on his NBA comeback bid
The three-time All-Star admittedly still has negative reps at this juncture, but the reality is that there were teams that actually wanted to sign him just last summer, even after coming off a pretty deflating stint with the LA Clippers. The Knicks were one of those teams which were rumored to have registered interest in signing him as a free agent. The Kings were another.
It is certainly quite strange that Sacramento, of all teams, is on the lookout for the prospect of adding the former 76ers star given that they have basically shunned all of their veterans this offseason. Simmons is already 30 years old and coming off a one-year sabbatical from the league, but that is well within their team's discretion.
Simmons did look good physically in his documented activities since he began his break, so it would appear that he is still in playing shape. Well, that in itself is a positive development for him, especially since his injury history is arguably his biggest red flag at this point in time.
The 76ers have been floated around as a destination for Simmons, but that has been more conjectural than real. Be that as it may, he has a good chance to be successful in his comeback attempt before the season begins, especially if he continues to be a standout in his private workouts. Hopefully, he gets to do exactly that, as there are still areas where he can still contribute positively to another NBA team.
