The Atlanta Hawks added a member of the Philadelphia 76ers’ front office last summer.
After five years with the Sixers, working under former President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey as the Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations, Peter Dinwiddie was hired to become the Senior Vice President of Strategy and Analytics for the Hawks. After one season, Dinwiddie is already climbing up the ladder.
A promotion is in store for the former Sixers Exec
On Tuesday, the Hawks officially announced that Peter Dinwiddie has been promoted to the role of Executive Vice President of Basketball Operations. It didn’t take long for him to land the same title he once held when he was in Philadelphia.
For Dinwiddie, it’s just another step in the right direction for his career, and maybe the final step before he gets an opportunity to run a front office operation with him in control. For the time being, Dinwiddie continues to work under Onsi Saleh.
In addition to Dinwiddie’s promotion, the Hawks also announced the promotion of Maxwell Kupchak, who becomes the Director of Cap Strategy and Player Personnel, along with the addition of Tim Bontemps, who leaves a role at ESPN to become the Front Office Strategic Advisor. While Bontemps didn’t exclusively cover the Sixers, he was frequently on the team’s beat over the years.
Dinwiddie’s Sixers past
When Daryl Morey took the keys to the Sixers’ front office away from Elton Brand in 2020, Dinwiddie was one of his first hires. Prior to joining the Sixers, Dinwiddie had a long run with the Indiana Pacers. After starting in a sales role, Dinwiddie worked his way up to joining the front office.
By 2017, Dinwiddie landed the Senior Vice President of Basketball Operations role with the Pacers. Morey put him in a position to join a star-studded Sixers team that was searching for a way to get over the second-round playoff hump. Leaving in 2025 for a different role with a Hawks team that was retooling was a risk. In hindsight, Dinwiddie made the right play.
There is no telling where Dinwiddie would be this summer if he stuck around. After the 2025-2026 NBA season, Morey was fired by the 76ers, and Elton Brand was removed from the General Manager role. Mike Gansey took over for Morey, with Jameer Nelson taking up Brand’s role. The front office hasn’t changed in every way, but there wouldn’t have been any guarantees for Dinwiddie. However, he doesn’t have to worry about that now. The Hawks dipped into the Sixers’ bag and landed a talented, analytically driven executive. We’ll see how far he can help them go.
