Assuming that the Philadelphia 76ers are cursed when it comes to health isn’t exactly a joke that lacks proof. Whether you believe in curses or not, the fact of the matter is that the Sixers have a long history of notable players suffering setbacks and dealing with some bad luck—especially during the Joel Embiid era.
It’s a lesson that many Sixers fans want Jaylen Brown to learn—but not the hard way!
Jaylen Brown is fighting more than opponents in the ring
It’s not rare for non-boxer celebrities and athletes to throw on some gloves and get in the ring. Typically, when athletes do it, they aren’t active in their sport. Brown is currently in the prime of his NBA career.
Yet, that didn’t stop him from getting active in a sparring session in front of a crowd out in Nigeria. Brown’s latest venture went viral on social media, with Sixers fans worried about his health ahead of the 2026-2027 NBA season. Brown hasn’t joined the long list of star players who end up with unfortunate setbacks in Philly, and nobody rooting for the team wants to see him do anything to land himself on there. He's fighting against a lack of luck.

Fortunately, Brown seems to be fine. Again, it was just a sparring session. With training camp around the corner for the Sixers, one has to hope that’s it for the star forward’s offseason boxing run. Brown is facing a major change in his basketball career for the first time since entering the league.
The 29-year-old forward entered the NBA out of California in 2016. He was the No. 3 pick for the Boston Celtics. Right now, the Celtics are all Brown knows. He’s played all 674 of his games for the franchise, and even contributed to winning a title with them during the 2023-2024 NBA season.
When it comes to health, Brown has been quite fortunate. Outside of three seasons, Brown has played in at least 65 games each year. He recently missed the mark by two games during the 2024-2025 season. Last year, Brown was back on the court for 71 games. As the Celtics dealt with the absence of Jayson Tatum throughout the year, Brown put together an MVP-caliber run. He averaged 28.7 points, 6.9 rebounds, and 5.1 assists.
The Sixers are banking on Brown to be available more frequently, after they struggled with the stars Joel Embiid and Paul George’s lack of availability over the past two seasons. With Brown replacing George, the Sixers are looking forward to getting an MVP-level player on the court for around 70 games during the regular season.
He won the box with bad luck in the ring recently. Now, we'll see if he can win the bout on the court.
