The Philadelphia 76ers have added a new name to the injury report: Jaylen Brown.
This one is sure to raise eyebrows, considering the Sixers haven't had a real setback from their starting five outside of VJ Edgecombe through the first week and a half of action.
Plus, the 76ers acquired Brown with the belief that he would be one of their most reliable stars on the health front. Seeing him pop up on the injury report with knee soreness just five games in is something that will leave fans uncomfortable, considering the Sixers' luck on the injury front over the past decade.
What we know about Jaylen Brown's setback
Nick Nurse hasn't spoken to reporters since the 76ers revealed their injury report for Friday's action against the New York Knicks. As of Friday morning, the Sixers have Brown on the injury report with a questionable status due to left knee soreness.
There wasn't a memorable moment in the Sixers' latest outing against the Indiana Pacers that suggested Brown injured his knee. The veteran forward played a total of 34 minutes in the win against the Pacers. He made 53.8% of his shots from the field to score 20 points. Brown logged a double-double with 10 rebounds, dished out two assists, snatched one steal, and blocked one shot. The 76ers beat the Pacers 114-109.
Does Jaylen Brown have a concerning past?
When you see the words "knee soreness" in Philadelphia, it might make you nervous. With all of the setbacks that Joel Embiid has had in that area, especially over the past three seasons, it's a triggering set of words.
Brown doesn't carry the same injury-prone label as Embiid, but two seasons ago he did deal with knee-related concerns with the Boston Celtics. Back in March 2025, Brown started dealing with knee concerns. He missed some games here and there. After having a 70-game campaign in 2023-2024, Brown played in just 63 games that season. For the most part, he worked through the knee pain before ultimately undergoing surgery in the offseason for a partially torn meniscus.
Fortunately, Brown didn't have issues staying healthy for a large part of the 2025-2026 NBA season. The ex-Celtics star appeared in 71 games last year. That's a number that would be ideal for Brown to achieve on the 76ers.
This is a new concern for Brown this year. It's not the same knee he received surgery on two years ago, which is a good sign. However, Brown did have some left knee issues earlier in his career with the Celtics. The good news is that he didn't miss too much time as a result. Soon, we'll see if Brown can get the nod to play some NBA Cup action against the Knicks on Friday night.
