The New York Knicks loaded up on signing players this week, adding some recognizable names to their roster. However, with just one open roster spot, most will get cut loose before the start of the 2026-2027 NBA season.
The Philadelphia 76ers should be paying close attention to the champions. As the Knicks do their homework on a couple of bigs, the Sixers could be eyeing one of New York's latest additions when they are no longer being held back by their financial situation.
The new Knicks to keep an eye on
On Tuesday night, the Knicks added Drew Eubanks to the training camp roster. On Wednesday afternoon, the former top-three pick James Wiseman was included in their roundup of signings as well.
Eubanks, 29, joins the Knicks' preseason squad after a 42-game run with the Sacramento Kings. Last season, Eubanks appeared in 42 games, starting 11 of those matchups. He saw the court for an average of 13.1 minutes per game. Making 59.6% of his shots, Eubanks averaged 5.2 points. He also came down with 3.0 rebounds per game.
Prior to the run in Sacramento, Eubanks played for the Los Angeles Clippers, Utah Jazz, Phoenix Suns, Portland Trail Blazers, and the San Antonio Spurs. With 426 games under his belt (86 starts), Eubanks has plenty of tape out there. But this is the first time he could potentially share the court with a legitimate championship-ready roster.
As for Wiseman, the 25-year-old started his career with the Golden State Warriors, who were hitting a rough patch before their next title run. Despite landing on the team as the No. 2 pick, Wiseman did not have a future on the Warriors. He was traded to the Detroit Pistons during his sophomore season.
Since then, Wiseman spent time with the Pistons and the Indiana Pacers. However, he appeared in just five games across the last two years with the Pacers. A torn Achilles and a turbulent time with the Pacers caused Wiseman to struggle to find his fit once again.
The state of the big man in Philly
Center depth feels like the most obvious need for the Sixers at this point. Behind an often-injured Joel Embiid is Adem Bona and Ariel Hukporti. The Sixers could, and probably will, get creative with different lineups that include somebody like Dominick Barlow at the five, but that's not a long-term solution.
In a perfect world, one or both of Bona and Hukporti display the ability to start some games, filling in for Embiid, while being a strong contributor off the bench. If neither player can win the front office over, then the Sixers will certainly eye up the options in free agency. The Knicks' preseason will include two prospects worth watching for Philadelphia.
