As far as playmakers go, the Philadelphia 76ers are hardly blessed with natural options. LeBron James' basketball IQ makes him the perfect candidate to facilitate the Sixers' offense, and Tyrese Maxey has significantly improved in this area. However, outside of these two stars, Nick Nurse has few floor generals to call upon. Labaron Philon Jr's preseason cameos suggest he could thrive in this area for his new team.
Philon Jr's role could be increased out of necessity
Philon Jr. has landed in a phenomenal position in Philadelphia. Few people expect the rookie to feature heavily in the rotation because of the superstars around him. Veterans like LeBron, Joel Embiid, and Jaylen Brown will accelerate his development, but his first year in the NBA might not be the vacation many expect.
As would be expected during a preseason schedule, the 76ers have restricted the game time of their starters, providing an opportunity for their young prospects to shine. Philon Jr. might not have stunned fans with his performances, but there has been plenty to get excited about -- especially his keen playmaking eye.
His latest showing in Philadelphia's 144-106 defeat to the Boston Celtics was the greatest sign yet that his passing ability can be an important feature from the Sixers' bench this year. In 25 minutes, Labaron recorded 14 points, 7 assists, and just 2 turnovers.
With performances of this nature, the rookie is not going to be placed on the same pedestal as VJ Edgecombe, nor should he be. While in any other draft class, Philon Jr. would have undoubtedly been one of the top picks, in 2026, he was selected with Philadelphia's 22nd overall pick for a reason. The 20-year-old is not the finished product. Yet, the 76ers' lack of playmaking depth means he is likely to be thrown in at the deep end, regardless of what he is ready for.
Maxey's game could flourish with more time alongside Labaron
There is still little insight into who will dictate the 76ers' offense this season; however, with LeBron's eye for a pass and championship experience, it is hard to believe Nick Nurse will look much further than the 41-year-old. A move like this would allow Tyrese Maxey to concentrate on his off-ball movement and spot-up shooting. But without capable cover, Maxey will again have to wear an abundance of capes as he covers the voids his teammates leave.
Labaron Philon's rise to prominence would be in his teammate's best interests. Although Maxey is capable of switching between the 76ers’ leading scoring option and primary playmaker, doing so consistently would prevent him from showcasing the best of his abilities. A ball distributor off the bench, such as Philon, would bring tactical stability to what Maxey is being asked to do.
Nobody should get overly excited about preseason performances, but Labaron Philon Jr's steady playmaking development is exactly what this Philadelphia 76ers roster requires; depth in this particular area is scarce. The rookie might not be completely ready to become the team's secondary ball handler off the bench, although necessity will likely dictate his fate.
