The Quentin Grimes free agency situation is a front that will easily end up presupposing one of the more vital calls the Philadelphia 76ers can make in the coming offseason. The 26-year-old, just like last year, will hit the open market once again. However, the team could very well face a formidable foe to retain his services with the Los Angeles Lakers lurking.
As projected by ESPN's Bobby Marks, Grimes will likely be commanding a salary close to the midlevel exception, which the Lakers could easily afford thanks to their boatload of cap space this offseason. Nine of their players will be hitting free agency this summer, so a roster turnover is definitely going to happen for the Lakeshow.
If so, the 76ers will have a more difficult time coming to terms with Grimes' camp on a new deal. As can be gleaned from their disposition last summer, they are going to be on the hunt for the biggest payday possible, and even a more ideal situation for the guard role-wise in Philly may not be enough to beat a team that can outbid the team financially.
The Lakers could foil the 76ers in free agency with regard to Quentin Grimes
Grimes is coming off an up-and-down year in which he clearly struggled adjusting in between roles. He was tabbed as the nominal sixth man for the 76ers, but with so many players missing considerable time due to injuries, he had to fill multiple hats. As a result, his efficiency took a major hit. He shot just 45 percent of his field goal attempts and only 33.4 percent of his three-point tries, and his overall shot aggression vacillated.
Be that as it may, Grimes is someone who can substantially increase any bench unit's ceiling. He is a capable scorer in his own right, and when his shot is on, defenses have to account for him at all times. In addition, he is a viable playmaker on the secondary, which reflects the fact that he is more than just a release valve on the offensive end.
Grimes would certainly fit well with the Lakers just like with the 76ers. Aside from the fact that he has some experience playing with Luka Doncic, Los Angeles is in dire need of more well-rounded players who can punish defenses for doubling down on their stars. That is the one thing they are missing right now, and Grimes can provide a healthy supply of auxiliary offense.
If the 76ers want to bolster their bench (and to save face after their decision to trade Jared McCain), keeping Quentin Grimes is a must. The reality, however, is that a team like the Lakers are well-equipped to make life tougher on them on that end, which is a major hurdle they have to clear this summer.
