LeBron James has a chance to either cement his legacy or ruin it with the Philadelphia 76ers. James is already one of the greatest basketball players in the history of the sport, and if he wins the championship with a fourth team while with the Sixers, it would strengthen his case for being the greatest of all time. But losing would do the opposite.
If James doesn't win a title with the Sixers, conversations will be started about whether or not he's good enough to win anymore. Obviously, those conversations are silly, considering he's 41 years old, but those talks have always followed James. And if he goes to a fourth team but doesn't get the job done, that could put a small stain on his career
Again, those conversations aren't necessarily fair, but they'll happen anyway. So, whether or not Philadelphia wins with James could have an impact on his legacy.
Losing in Philadelphia would affect LeBron James' legacy
When James left the Cleveland Cavaliers for the Miami Heat, there were people who criticized them. People criticized his decision to leave the team that drafted him in hopes of winning a ring elsewhere.
Obviously, that worked out for James, as he won two championships in Miami, but he even managed to make up for the decision by eventually going back to Cleveland.
As soon as James won a championship with the Cavaliers, it was as if all of the criticism for him leaving was dampened. He went back and got the job done for Cleveland. He didn't completely abandon the team that drafted him.
Then, James eventually left the Cavaliers again, deciding to join the Los Angeles Lakers. Once he got there, the pressure was on him to win once again.
He did. James won a title in 2020 with Anthony Davis alongside him, becoming one of the best players ever to win a championship with three separate franchises throughout the course of his career.
But now, James is on the fourth team. He has won a championship with every single team he has joined up to this point. So, if he doesn't win one with the 76ers, that trend will end with Philadelphia.
James will no longer be known as the guy who won every single place he went. Because in his final few years, he went to a new place but didn't win a title.
And if that ends up being the case, it will certainly be brought up when people talk about his legacy.
