A direction of travel must be decided -- and fast.

Finally, the Giannis Antetokounmpo trade saga is finally over. However, not everybody will be as relieved as I am. Mike Gansey and the Philadelphia 76ers will wake up knowing that the Miami Heat has just become more dangerous by landing 'The Greek Freak'. With the Eastern Conference landscape growing tougher by the day, Gansey must decide whether to go all in on a championship tilt or hit a soft reset and build for the future.

The 76ers have to start making moves

While it is still very early days of the trade season, there is little noise coming out of the Philadelphia 76ers camp. Maybe Mike Gansey is running a tight ship and keeping the franchise's cards close to its chest, or maybe the Sixers are still working out the direction that their new era shall take.

Nobody wants Gansey to hit the panic button and impulsively waste the 76ers' limited cap space, but playoff rivals from the East are being proactive in the market and showing significant intent to improve. The Heat have landed Giannis, the Brooklyn Nets have acquired Julius Randle to partner with Michael Porter Jr., and the Milwaukee Bucks have created a young core that should not be underestimated.

The quality of the Eastern Conference continues to improve, and teams are making serious strides toward establishing themselves as contenders for an automatic playoff berth. A patient and methodical approach from the 76ers may be admired from some quarters, but they must tread carefully or risk losing too much ground to their rivals.

Mike Gansey has hinted that Philadelphia will look to run back the core of its current roster and add depth to create a situation where a championship push is realistic. However, for this to be the case, the Sixers can't add pieces half-heartedly to improve the squad. The front office must show ambition by adding actual talent that moves the needle. If this is not possible, then Gansey must consider building a team for the future.

Gansey's decision must be definitive

For too many years, the Philadelphia 76ers have worn the mask of a championship contender without laying competent foundations to match their supposed ambition. The New York Knicks have provided the perfect blueprint to win a championship: believe in your mission and sanction any move financially possible to make it happen. In contrast, Philadelphia has been more concerned about dodging the league's luxury tax threshold.

If Mike Gansey's vision is to make a serious tilt at the Larry O'Brien trophy, then he must do everything he can to maximise the talent on this roster. If he has any spending limitations imposed by the 76ers' owner, Josh Harris, then he must opt to build a young core around Tyrese Maxey and VJ Edgecombe rather than wasting another season on mediocrity.

While the approach may be different, constructing a young roster must be executed in the same manner as building a championship-worthy team. No shortcuts can be taken. Gansey must be all-in on this vision. Do not worry about the season's record. Take every action possible to accumulate as much draft capital and young talent as possible. If this requires taking a cut-price deal for stars like Paul George, then so be it.

At this moment in time, the Philadelphia 76ers are stuck in NBA purgatory. They do not have a roster that matches teams like the Knicks, the Boston Celtics, and, now with the acquisition of Giannis, the Heat. On the other hand, this is not a squad of players for the future. Mike Gansey must act swiftly and pick a lane. The longer he takes to decide the future of the franchise, the harder it will be to make his vision a reality.
