The 2026 NBA Draft is just a couple of days away, meaning that the Philadelphia 76ers should already have a clear idea of what and who they want before the annual event. More importantly, though, the rookie selection will be the first foray of new team president Mike Gansey as the lead decision-maker for the franchise, and how he maneuvers will make for a huge statement no matter what it looks like.

Last season, the 76ers had a pretty eventful draft night as they ended up selecting VJ Edgecombe with the third overall pick. The Baylor product quickly proved himself as one of the best prospects in his draft class, and now, the team is set up for success in the foreseeable future with him installed as a surefire franchise cornerstone. Philly will not have a similarly lofty draft pick this time around, but the expectation of getting a buildable piece for the coming years remains.

For now, there is an air of mystique veiling around Gansey. Previously the general manager for the Cleveland Cavaliers, he oversaw the latter stages of the Cavs' rebuild and their ascent into a powerhouse in the Eastern Conference. Be that as it may, being the team president presupposes an even more expansive scope of duty, and for that, there is no precedence yet as to how he prefers to operate, especially when it comes to building a roster.

What tends to get glossed over as of late is the fact that technically, the 76ers do not have a general manager. That means that their decision-making core for the most part currently consists of Gansey, new team vice president Jameer Nelson, and the ownership group repped by Bob Myers.

Philadelphia only has one draft pick this year –– the 22nd overall selection. As such, whoever ends up being the 76ers' draft pick will be more pronounced than usual, especially since it will become reflective of how Gansey intends to approach the tedious task of fixing the team's pressing roster needs.

No one knows if Gansey will aim to draft based on the best talent available or on the basis of fit. Certain executives have a knack for specific player prototypes like Daryl Morey, although Gansey has not really exhibited such tendencies since taking over the GM position in Cleveland in 2022. Quite honestly, he has only made one notable selection during his stint, which was Jaylon Tyson in 2024 (although that can be tossed up to the Cavs only having one lottery pick during that span).

More than anything, Mike Gansey will already be on deck for a vital litmus test for the Philadelphia 76ers with the 2026 NBA Draft. Hopefully, he and his crew can make the right decision to kick off the offseason on a high note as he aims to set the tone for his tenure with the franchise.
