Luck and the Philadelphia 76ers aren’t exactly two things people usually associate with each other. The franchise's postseason fate is now somewhat out of its hands. A win in their last game of the season will not be enough to secure an automatic postseason seeding. If both the Toronto Raptors and the Orlando Magic lose, it would create a situation where the Sixers could avoid the Play-In Tournament.

In some ways, this has been a far greater season for the 76ers than any fan would have anticipated. The landscape was distorted as the 2025-26 NBA season commenced. Joel Embiid's knee health was unknown, VJ Edgecombe was expected to need a grace period to transition, and nobody knew which Paul George would return to the franchise in his second year. Despite all of this, Philadelphia is on course for some form of postseason qualification.

The Sixers currently sit in 8th position in the Eastern Conference with a 44-37 record, leaving them one game behind both Toronto (6th) and Orlando (7th) in the standings. It is going to take a miracle, but the 76ers could still clinch an automatic playoff seeding.

76ers' postseason fate hinges on the final day results

This is exactly what fans desire from the NBA regular-season -- jeopardy. Gone are the weeks of mindless tanking, which sees teams perform poorly to increase their chances of landing a lottery draft pick. On the season’s final day, several teams will fight desperately to avoid the Play-In Tournament -- a punishing path that could add two games with nothing to show for it

For Philadelphia, defeating Doc Rivers and the Milwaukee Bucks will be the only thing on their mind. By falling to defeat in this matchup, they will be sentenced to Play-In purgatory without their x-factor, Joel Embiid, and will have to field an injury-stricken Tyrese Maxey. Unfortunately for Sixers fans, they will have to keep one keen eye on other results around the East.

Results must finish as follows for the 76ers to clinch an automatic playoff berth:

  • Philadelphia defeat the Bucks.
  • The Raptors lose to the Brooklyn Nets.
  • The Magic lose to the Boston Celtics.

Simple right? First and foremost, the 76ers never chose the easy route and could easily fall to defeat to the Bucks without a fully fit Maxey on the floor, and Embiid unavailable for selection.

Secondly, Toronto (45-36) has gone 5-5 in its last five games, but the Brooklyn Nets have little to fight for as they languish in the lower echelons of the Eastern Conference. Also, it should be noted that the Raptors are the home team in this fixture and have won 23 of their 40 games in the Scotiabank Arena.

On paper, with the Orlando Magic (45-36) having to travel to the Boston Celtics and clinch a victory at the TD Garden seems unlikely. As we all know, games aren’t won on paper — unless, of course, you’re talking about the Celtics' injury report. The notable inclusions on Boston's injury list are: Jaylen Brown (Left Achilles Tendonitis), Payton Pritchard (Left Foot Plantar Fasciitis - Doubtful), Jayson Tatum (Right Achilles Repair Management), and Derrick White (Right Knee Contusion).

As fans of any sporting franchise, you must believe that miracles happen. Nobody pays extortionate ticket prices to watch an inevitable result be confirmed before their very eyes -- people want jeopardy.

Well, if you are a part of the Philadelphia faithful, this is exactly what you need: a miracle. Securing a playoff spot wouldn’t just avoid the Play-In Tournament; it would also buy the Philadelphia 76ers valuable time as they await the return of Joel Embiid, whose presence is essential to any championship hopes -- if those hopes still exist.
