NBA GMs aren't totally buying into the hype of LeBron's 76ers impact

Difference-maker? Sure. Most impactful? Different story.

After seeing the hype that LeBron James' free agency generated this past summer, it's surprising to see that NBA GMs don't believe he'll be the most impactful acquisition in the NBA for the Philadelphia 76ers in 2026-2027.

Will he make a difference? Sure. The survey says that LeBron tied for the third-most votes in the league with Toronto Raptors forward Kawhi Leonard.

The Sixers will still feel good knowing that another 20% of the votes went to the other star acquisition, Jaylen Brown, who is sitting second on the list. The 76ers' Eastern Conference foe, the Miami Heat, have the No. 1 spot after picking up Giannis Antetokounmpo in a trade with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Why LeBron and the 76ers shouldn't care

LeBron James and the 76ers can print out the GM survey and pin this part to their motivational bulletin board if they would like, but there are reasons not to care about it.

For starters, LeBron James doesn't need to defend his level of impact at this stage of his career. He should feel more than concerned about what he brings to the table.

Looking at a lineup that includes three All-Stars and an emerging young star, LeBron's high IQ and passing will certainly be rewarded throughout the upcoming season. It might not look like LeBron from the past few seasons, as his scoring could continue to take a step back, but his impact will come in a different package this time around.

Going beyond that, LeBron ended up being a luxury for the 76ers this offseason. Without him in 2025-2026, the 76ers were back in playoff contention after they won their lone Play-In game against the Charlotte Hornets. They defeated the Boston Celtics in the first round of the playoffs before losing to the eventual champions.

When the Sixers entered the offseason, they improved on paper with the acquisition of Jaylen Brown. A playoff team was not only still seen as such, but they were considered to be improved. James just added another element.

The Heat finished in a different place. They struggled to get out of the Play-In picture and ended up losing before picking up the eighth seed. Miami needed a big swing. Giannis is obviously an impactful player when healthy. The fact that they are expected to be in playoff contention after missing out on the bracket entirely last year would surely warrant the Greek Freak being a notable difference-maker in 2026-2027.

Therefore, no hurt feelings in Philly. Having the top two out of three is still a great situation.
