Some may consider the Philadelphia 76ers' season over after Joel Embiid fell victim to a bout of appendicitis that required immediate surgery. Little information has been provided on the Sixers superstar's recovery, leaving doubts over whether he will be available for the postseason. In the wake of this devastating news, head coach Nick Nurse must select a replacement who can make a positive contribution to the team. Adem Bona will be hoping this could ignite his NBA career.

There is no reality in which the 76ers can now compete for a championship without a healthy Joel Embiid on the roster. If the team can pull off a miracle and reach the latter stages of the playoffs, then the 32-year-old will have a chance of returning to action -- albeit not in prime form. However, Nick Nurse has too much to sort out down the stretch to focus on whether Embiid will return this season.

History has shown that when given the opportunity, one of the younger prospects of this roster can thrive.

Adem Bona can inject life into the Sixers' offense during Embiid's absence

If a franchise doesn’t have a generational talent like Joel Embiid, they need a player who can bring infectious energy to his teammates and fire up the crowd when the opponent has the momentum. Adem Bona brings this to the table while also being able to make an impact on both ends of the court.

It is no secret that Bona's greatest strength is his defensive attributes. Standing at six feet and 10 inches, the 23-year-old boasts the length and athleticism to disrupt any opposition's offensive game plan. Throughout his career, Bona has averaged 1.2 blocks and 4.3 rebounds, while chalking up 16.6 minutes per game. The former UCLA big has put up strong numbers with more minutes, including a career-high five blocks in three games -- first in a 126–122 win over Utah on March 9, 2025.

Additionally, when utilised correctly, Bona has proven he can be a useful weapon on offense. During the final month of the 2024-25 season, Nick Nurse was forced to hand his then-rookie center a starting role, an opportunity Bona snatched with both hands. Over the last seven games of the year, he impressively averaged 15.4 points, 8.4 rebounds, and 2.3 blocks per game, while shooting 72.6% from the floor.

During the same stretch, the Turkish international recorded 3.6 personal fouls per game. Foul trouble was a recurring issue for Bona in his rookie year, limiting his role -- whether due to poor reads or trying too hard to impress the head coach. However, in recent games, he has contained this immature side of his skill set, demonstrating that he is ready for a more prominent chance in the rotation.

Losing a dominant star like Joel Embiid would decimate any franchise's chances of reaching the latter stages of the postseason. Now, Adem Bona can turn this negative news into a fantastic opportunity for himself. If a sophomore truly wants to make a career-changing impression, there is no better time than during the most important stage of the campaign.
