While the Philadelphia 76ers enjoyed a win in their recent contest with Joel Embiid turning in a monstrous game, they were far from the biggest headliner that day. That honor goes to Chris Paul, who etched his name in the history books as one of the greatest point guards to ever grace the hardwood.
Now playing in his 20th season, Paul surpassed Jason Kidd to become the second-leading assists man in NBA history. Now with the San Antonio Spurs, CP3 has emerged as their de facto leader on the court, helping one of the most promising teams in the league and Victor Wembanyama race off to a surprisingly pleasant start to the season.
Paul, however, is one of the most divisive stars the league has ever seen. Widely known as a fierce competitor, he is not above doing whatever it takes to get his team as close as possible to winning, be it in the form of annoying mental games or his sly dirty tactics. Over the years, he has gotten a reputation as a pretty shrewd and cunning operator.
76ers star Paul George reveals reason for fallout with Chris Paul
In light of Paul’s latest achievement, George went on his podcast and bared about the status of his personal relationship with the future first-ballot Hall of Famer.
”I'm not the fondest of CP these days. Me and CP used to have a great relationship. He was the reason I got LSAIK. Our relationship was up to that level where I could give him a call... Now, fast forward, I think it was a playoff matchup against Phoenix, or it was a regular season game. Can't remember which one it was, but we get into it... Words was thrown out there that should't be thrown out there between two men. That kind of just drew the line for me.”
This was a pretty surprising spill, but it probably would not be that big of a shaker for fans familiar with Paul’s antics. Ever since he was in his younger days with New Orleans, he would often deliberately try to get under his opponents’ skin to gain an advantage. To be fair, probably no one in the association touts a better grasp of the rules than him.
At this point in his career, Paul still has not won a championship, though ring-chasing does not seem to be his priority at the moment. Obviously, he went to an uber young San Antonio team without firm expectations of winning the title, but to sniff the hardwood and remain a significant contributor to a team, which he is certainly enjoying as a Spur.
Time will tell whether fans will change their perception of the Point God, but for Paul George, there seems to be a remote possibility of him mending things with the veteran.
