The Philadelphia 76ers are on the verge of completing their first 3-1 playoff series comeback in franchise history, but doing so may keep Daryl Morey leading the franchise. They haven’t won a playoff series since 2023, and the Sixers have won just three in his first five years leading the team. Morey was brought in to win a championship. Philly has an expensive roster that won’t be easy to retool. Saturday’s Game 7 may be for Morey’s job.
That leaves fans in a difficult spot. They would love to see their 76ers defeat the rival Celtics and make a deep playoff run. Joel Embiid has never played beyond the second round, and everyone in Philly wants that to change. Supporters won’t be happy knowing that making a run means Morey staying put. Everyone is still rooting for the team, but another year of Morey will be upsetting.
It is not just fans that are mad at Morey. He upset Embiid late in the season and stunningly traded Jared McCain in his second year for draft picks. The move made no sense for a team in contention. It is all these warts and more that will give supporters a silver lining if Philly drops Game 7 in Boston.
Daryl Morey’s future hinges on 76ers defeating the Celtics in Game 7
Morey’s tenure is not a total disaster. He wisely drafted Tyrese Maxey 21st overall in 2020. That move likely has kept the 53-year-old executive in his job this long. He was also behind selecting VJ Edgecombe. The young guard duo will excite Philly fans for years to come, but the rest of Morey’s tenure has been a disaster.
Sixers fans would like to forget many of the problems. Bringing in Doc Rivers, the Ben Simmons drama, trading for James Harden, breaking up with Harden, signing Paul George, and re-signing an injured Joel Embiid all happened under Morey’s eye. Philly had an MVP leading their roster the entire time and has won three playoff series in six years. That is unacceptable.
The Sixers can’t fire him after upsetting the Celtics in their first 3-1 comeback in franchise history. Embiid has returned and impacted this series. PG isn’t a superstar, but he has transformed into a key role. A Game 7 win saves Morey’s job. It shouldn’t, but it will.
If they lose, all bets are off. Morey should be gone, but the Sixers would need an experienced replacement with a plan to upgrade this roster. The cap situation is a problem, and no team is willing to take on Embiid or George. The next lead executive would be digging out of Morey’s mess for a few years before getting a real shot to build out the roster his way.
Philadelphia 76ers fans have a silver lining if the team loses Game 7 to the rival Boston Celtics. Either they get more chances to cheer on their team, or it will be time to send Daryl Morey packing. Fans will be locked in on Saturday night. It will be high drama, and there is even more riding on this one. Don’t miss it.
