The Philadelphia 76ers defeated the Boston Celtics 111-97 in Game 2 of their first-round playoff series behind a 30-point double-double from rookie VJ Edgecombe. Nobody thought Philly would win after the Game 1 blowout, but Edgecombe’s breakout proves the time is now. Fans know Tyrese Maxey is a star. The 20-year-old rookie is blossoming before everyone’s eyes. The time is now to build a contender around their dynamic backcourt duo.
Morey already tipped his hand at the trade deadline. He foolishly traded Jared McCain to lock in Maxey and Edgecombe as the backcourt of the present and future. The draft capital he got in return for McCain may help the Sixers get off one of the max contracts weighing down their books. Morey knows that it is his quickest path to building a serious contender.
Edgecombe silenced anyone questioning if the Sixers made the right pick. His rookie season was better than anyone realized, and the 20-year-old just proved he is a star. Edgecombe’s breakout has to have the 76ers believing they are just a few moves away from being serious contenders.
VJ Edgecombe just altered the 76ers' future with a playoff breakout
Edgecombe became the 20th rookie since 1980 to have a 30-point playoff game. He finished with 30 points, ten rebounds, two assists, and two steals in 35 minutes of action in Boston. The rookie made 12 of his 20 field goal attempts, including hitting six 3-pointers. Philly outscored the rival Celtics by 17 with him on the floor, and Edgecombe offered an iconic moment to cap the night.

Nobody left Boston on Tuesday night thinking this was a rookie. He instantly took a starting role in Philadelphia and showed flashes of superstardom. It turned into a full breakout in Game 2. The Sixers dominated the second and fourth quarters to even the series as it swings back to the City of Brotherly Love.
Morey can’t run it back with this roster. The 76ers need a center upgrade, depth on the wing, and a true power forward. The monster contracts of Joel Embiid and Paul George make it difficult to spend, but Edgecombe’s breakout should have Morey considering every possible option. This is an elite backcourt that could be the next Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown. It is on the Sixers to put the right pieces around them to become a serious title threat.
Edgecombe only had three 30-point games in the regular season. Not many people saw this coming from a rookie guard. First-year players in the backcourt aren’t supposed to impact winning. The fact that Edgecombe is should make the Sixers even more willing to go all-in.
The Philadelphia 76ers clearly have a star backcourt to build around in VJ Edgecombe and Tyrese Maxey. The rookie’s 30-point Game 2 proved that. He is a star in the making and ready to lead the Sixers to playoff success. Now, Morey must put the right pieces around him. The rookie added pressure in Game 2, but fans should be excited. The best is yet to come, and Edgecombe is going to be a star. That alone gives Philly fans hope moving forward.
