Move over Al Horford and Matt Geiger, there's a new contender for the title of worst signing in Philadelphia 76ers history!
During last summer's free agency period, Daryl Morey and company opted to shell out a fully guaranteed four-year, $211.6 million contract to All-Star wing Paul George, a move that led many to believe the Sixers would legitimately leap into full-blown title contender status.
Fast forward to just over a year later, however, and the signing seems to have led to far more pain than pride for Philadelphia fans. The ball club wrapped up the 2024-25 season with the fifth-worst record in the league (24-58) while their Big Three of Joel Embiid, George, and Tyrese Maxey played just 15 games alongside one another due to myriad injuries.
Even while their star trio was on the floor together, the success was far from enviable, as they went just 7-8 while their maxed-out forward was seen averaging just 16.2 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists on 43.0 percent shooting and while boasting a -2.0 plus-minus in his 41 total games played.
Now, while some may have thought the conclusion of this past campaign should have led to the end of all the madness, sadly, the nightmare of this experiment doesn't appear to be even close to ending.
Remember, we have three more years to go and, based on recent reports, year two could begin with a similar amount of turmoil.
Paul George injury could make him the worst signing in 76ers history
Last month, it was announced that George underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee after sustaining an injury during an offseason workout session. Though there's no set timetable for his return, it was announced that he will be re-evaluated before the start of training camp.
While it could be argued as being a relief knowing that he has a full summer to rest and rehabilitate compared to if he had undergone the procedure mid-season, as he would have wound up missing a number of games in the process, considering he was already receiving injections in this same knee before officially being shelved back in March, this injury should be quite concerning to Sixers fans.
Unfortunately, checkered health has been a serious problem for George over these last several seasons, as he's played in just 304 games of a potential total of 472 games over the last six years and has seen above 60 games played just once since 2019-20.
Though it's still technically too early to tab him as the worthy recipient of the tumultuous title of worst signing in 76ers history, with the way things have gone in a matter of just 13 months, Paul George seems well on his way toward being crowned as such.
