In our last recap article, we discussed how the 76ers have been consistently winning the free throw battle during the Summer League. If I was an NBA team, I wouldn’t challenge the 76ers to a free throw contest. The refs turned the 76ers sixth game into one and the free throw domination continued leading to another victory.
To be honest, Tuesday night’s game against the Timberwolves was hard to watch. I imagine it was as difficult for the players to find their rhythm as it was for spectators to enjoy the action as possession after possession was halted by a whistle. I haven’t heard that many whistles going off since the last AAU tournament I attended, and that had multiple games going simultaneously.
3. 76ers win big at the free-throw bonanza
Either way, it played right into one of the 76ers strengths. They converted 40 of their 44 attempts. That’s right! 44 free throws in a single game. I don’t know what the record is for team attempts in a single game but that has to be close. Please don't make me watch the one that had more.
The Timberwolves converted 25 of their 31 attempts combining for 75 total free throws during the game. My goodness!
Impressively, the entire 76ers’ team shot well from the line. No player missed more than two attempts and Jared McCain led the way going a perfect nine for nine.
The Summer League is approaching its conclusion. As of writing this article, the 76ers sit at tenth in the standings and are a long shot to reach the top four for a chance to compete for the championship. With that being said, they play the undefeated Spurs on Friday and if they win by a large margin and other teams falter during their matchups down the stretch, anything can happen.
At the very least, a minimum of two games are left for the 76ers and here are a couple of things to watch for as the summer wraps up.
